Not that I can help but I've got a BMW 525tds which is the same engine and gearbox as you. This happens to me sometimes too. I've changed the oil and filter in the gearbox and it still does the same. I suspect it's one of the clutches sticking in the gearbox.

Sounds like something binding in the drivetrain. See if it will go if you take the propshafts off. If it still stalls then it must be something in the gearboxes. If the propshaft flanges can be turned with the main box in neutral, it would suggest that the transfer box is OK, so that would narrow it down to the main box.

I had this problem on a different model and it turned out to be the handbrake shoes had glued themselves on to the inside of the drum with rust.

Not in my case. If I'm just sitting with the engine running and I go from P to D (or R) then sometimes the engine revs drop and the engine dies, but I have my foot on the brake as I'm stationary. So there should not be anything drivetrain related as I'm not actually moving.

Thanks for the

Well, I was using the term drivetrain to include gearboxes! I was just talking about how one might narrow it down to the gearbox if that is indeed what it was.

Auto boxs can get really complicated as it works on oil pressure and oil veins but I wouldnt of thought this would have let you down with out you noticing something wrong .I had excatly same problem with my 300zx twin turbo and it was a nightmare I could leave the car running for ages no problems but as soon as I put into gear she died turned out to be water temp sensors putting car into limp mode which in turn stalled the car.after I cleaned all the sensors/wiring it was fine but I was bare hasttle .I would clean all sensors before I done owt else

This morning when I pulled up at home on the dash board it said gearbox fault now this is the second time it's said that. How can I find out what the fault is ????

As said above you could try cleaning the sensors but ultimately a code reader plugged in will give you more information.

How many miles has it done? Has the gearbox had an oil and filter change at any point?

If its too low on oil it wont work properly or at all atuo boxs are similar to hyrdovaine they work on pressure even if a gasket goes it can lock the gearbox

If its got a dipstick then you can check the colour and smell of the gearbox fluid. The dip stick will be in the engine bay somewhere. If not then you'll have to drain some fluid out of the gearbox but you'll have to do that when changing the fluid anyway.

Colour and smell of the fluid will give you some indication as to the state of the gearbox.
