hi

its me back again :D with some more questions on my friends 2003 td4

1. he noticed that there is air flow out of the RHS on the air-filter assembly through a smal round hole , is this normal or indicative of a badly fitted air-filter

2. the previous owner had removed the original radio and just slotted in a single din replacement, which as you can imagine just slops around:eek:. ( see attached pic of dash )

i have googled for an adapter that will allow him to fit a single din unit but the alternative parts all appear to be for a double din config or am i reading them wrong.

3. he attempted to bypass the egr valve ( after cleaning it out in-situ using carb cleaner ) using the short method of splitting the pipe going into the valve and then plugging each side.

When he started the car the volume/density of exhaust fumes was unbelievably high so he reverted to the original straight-through setup, which after a short while appeared to
revert the exhaust level to normal.

Should that have happened or does it point to another problem.

4. he tried to remove one of the wheels but it has a locking nut but no unlocking socket ( apart for the one for the rear mounted spare wheel ) it appears to be factory installed and
he's wondering if the relevant key can be bought from a land-rover dealer?.

I really think that he has bought the lemon of the year and trying to assist him as best i can.

thanks in advance

brendan

Hi Brendan,

Sounds like your friend is a bit short - of something.

Q1. There should not be any small round holes for air to come out - put a tape patch on it!

Q2. Don't know.

Q3. He did it wrong. Put everything back the way it was and just take off the little vacuum pipe at the front. Better to buy a real by-pass.

Q4. The locking-nut for the rear spare wheel should be the same as all the others.
He can buy a new socket key from any LR agent if he can prove he is the owner.

hi Singvogel

thanks for the help.

Q1 : there is definetly a small circular hole on the rhs of the airfilter cover as i've seen it myself. I will get him to Duct tape it up , but would like to know why its there.

Q3: have mentioned to him about getting a bypass Valve

Q4: no the rear spare wheel bolt has 2 slots in it to accept the unlocking tool whereas the ones on the wheels appear to be round with no way to use the tool for the rear spare wheel.

keep those idea's coming

brendan

the nuts on the road wheels have black covers which have to be pulled off with the black tube shaped tool in the tool kit, or a pair of grips, then you can get to the locking wheel nut.

by the looks of your picture - the stereo and the dash on the early freelanders where all single din anyway - so any single din stereo should fit without any adapters.

Are you trying to come out bredan :lvkiss-106::lvi-love-u-193: Just where is the ****er smilie

hi all,

just for the record I genuinely DON'T own a freelander but I do own a Volvo S80 and a Mercedes E240 , both of which have never given me a days problem.

Now having stated what i do own/drive the expierence that my friend is going through with his purchase really would turn me off buying a freelander.

So in summary I'am only looking for help for a friend who doesn't have internet access and NOT for myself. If i was looking for help for myself i am quite able to say so and Soloby Rob I dont appreciate the ****er smilie innuendo at all and i think it was totally uncalled for .

For all those who have genuinely offered advice and support I thank you

regards

brendan

Hi,
The little hole at the right hand end of the air filter housing is to hold a black plastic clip that restrains a hose that disappears round the back.

If the clip is still there - shove it back in it's hole.

No big deal without it but the hose will rub on the edge of the filter housing.

Get a new clip or tape up the hole.

Tell your mate - good luck.
