More bits that apear to be missing on my Disco

I'm right in saying that there should be a bolt in here as a plug to keep stop the oil falling out of the transmission shouldn't there?

I was in the process of trying to free off my very stuck diff when I noticed the hole (see pictures attached). Theres no oil on the drive so guess it has just droped out on the road having been a bit loose or something as it was there when I looked under the thing when I was buying it 2 months ago having just had a fluids and filters change).

Best option for quick replacement? Anyone know what the thread size is as the emergency solution over Christmas could be to stick a bolt and a rubber washer in there and top up oil. Will it be empty if that stopper has gone or do I need to find another drain point so I can drain it to ID how much oil I need.

My last oil change was I Nissan Micra 5 years ago as my 406is far to much like hard work so is ALWAYS a garage job for anything like that.

Exactly correct, and dont stick fokal in it or the oil will build up and fook yur clutch, unless you go wading of course but then you take it back out again.

What exactly were you freeing off, a diff?
 
Sorry for appearing a bit thick but I'm a spark enthusiasticly but haphazardly trying to learn my way around the underside of a mechanical masterpiece.

The thread in the hole in question looked suspiciously clean and unmuddied / corroded so I assumed it had only recently been exposed (as most of the underside is wax oiled and most of the rest is mud and rust). It went into what think is part of the transmission (on pic 2 the hole can just be seen a little lower than dead centre of the pic) and so I figured that as the gearbox has oil in there was a risk that a hole in the transmission that close to the gearbox may present an oil drainage issue.

At the same time as strating this thread I was also digging throught the manual for oil change to see if a pic would help.

Since Robint mentioned wading plugs I tried looking them up and it looks like that is what it is for (300TDi only apparently). I guess there was a wadign plug in badly when I got it and now I don't have one. I don't get a lot of flooding this near the coast and don't wade for fun much so if I've just lost the wading plug I may not bother replacing it!
 
OK I get the idea I promise not to put any oil in or stuff a bolt in the drain hole and it is the centre diff locking linkage I'm trying to free up. Diff lock works OK (except no indicator light on dash) but linkage seized solid as probably been used no more than twice in it's lifetime so now I want it moving and I've had to drown it in desiezer and hit it with a hammer. I've left the spray on deseize overnight but I'm suspecting to be taking the centre console out to get at the top of the linkage whan I get time (back in work tomorrow for a day :mad:)

Sometimes the long way is the short way mucker, and in the end that consol might be coming out. Would be winter eh, never mind in the summer spend some time on it and next year you will be fine.

Hope you took the rear carpets out the boot area before the floor drops out.
 
cheers, the floor of the boot is suprisingly solid but the front footweels have rusted through into the sills in places (may need sorting before MOT if it gets any closer to the drivers seat mounting).
