Hi All,

I'm assisting work on the restoration of a Series 2A, fitted with a later 5mb Series 3 petrol engine.
In an effort for better reliability I want to fit a more modern geared pre engaged starter motor.
Can anyone confirm I can fit a starter off a 2.5 90, or indeed suggest a better starter? Diesel 90?
I want to do this while the wings are off and I can easily alter the wiring loom. Thanks.

Something at the back of my memory is suggesting that it's the same ring gear but fitted the other way around.
Not 100% certain on that but I'm pretty confident you could fit a diesel flywheel to the petrol crankshaft, along with a diesel type engine block bellhousing.
Then you could fit a 200Tdi type starter motor.
A lot of work just to avoid an inertia type starter motor. but maybe not if the engine is already out of the vehicle, and you have the relevant bits to hand.

The 200tdi starter fits the S3 5mb engine , but

the petrol flywheel not the same as diesel, if you’re going for replacement go for a good branded make

2.5 Petrol fits according to this
