If you want the better choice for playing offroad(not working) get an auto.

There will aslways be a debate but I think as a LR is really one of the worst built vehicles you will ever own it's impossible for you to get that 0.0000000000000000001 improvement you may get if you chose to drag race your LR. Also don't forget your short shift kit and go faster stripes

Lots in them little tin cans called cars, or in lorry's

Got close to 1.5 million miles+ driven. equally between standard and auto boxes. For cars and pickups autos are more reliable, and the difference of 3% difference in mpg is not worth it. Standard boxes are cheaper to make, and a auto will out last a manual in the long haul. and I'll take a auto over a standard trans any time off road or on road.

So this debate about who is a better driver is all a opinion, just like a body part everyone has 1. And in this case neither is right or wrong.

OK, you're having trouble understanding my point of view. Here it is simplified -

A manual box is the only way to have full control over your engine.

A auto box will be better for the inexperienced.

I've had both, as I've said, and for what I need the auto wasn't a patch on a manual.

A manual box is more fuel efficient than a auto, if driven correctly!

I've never said anything about only "real men" ( well maybe in jest on another thread!!).

You still can't compare a auto box racing car with a Land Rover.

the comparison is. The best driver BMW has on staff is a bloody brilliant racing driver. He had is ass kicked by an unmanned car of equal caliber. 2 M5's. so it was an example of an auto being actually better. Off road and auto can do 100% what a manual can do if you can drive an auto ofcourse. So the vehicle itself is totally identical. The only difference here is what you want.

1:To spend more time controlling the vehicle.
2:To spend more time watching what is up ahead.

to say an auto can't do what a manual can doesn't show any-one to be a better driver in fact quite the opposite. Ratty stated he can make either do what the other one can but as he is in a position that could get very messy very quickly he wants to be the sole person at fault if it goes wrong.. That way he knows 100% what happened.

The BMW example isn't relevant as it's realitively simple to computer control a car round a clinical race track. Has a similar thing been done off road? I would imagine a person would beat the computer every time.

Yes, but this thread is relation to auto and manual boxes on a twenty year old UK Discovery 1. I'm sure what that link says is all correct regarding new cars in the states.

I was always of the opinion that manual was better for off road, however since becoming involved with trialling there is only 1 person that CCV's with a manual.

I now have both, a manual 300tdi defender and a auto RRC and I see why everyone uses auto boxes there is so much going on with trialling that you need to be concerning yourself with your line and getting around not what gear to be in.

The rangey has also converted me from diesel to a petrol head but thats another discussion

Snowman v8. I accept your challenge. I'm happy to pit my manual td5 110 against your auto v8. I'm happy with my competence at driving a manual and you are obviously happy with your competence driving an auto so how about a trip to Salisbury plains to compare notes?

I'm not after a 'who has a biggest balls' contest but as we are both happy about our own abilities I'm happy to put this theory to the test.

I'm not talking extreme off roading here. I'm talking about comparing differences between auto boxes and manual boxes going up and down steep slippery slopes, cross axle situations and the like. I'd like to know if it is down to driver ability or transmission type.

And I get to keep the sidesteps, which is good as I like the look of them, although never use them.

Not an issue. It will prove that neither manual or auto is "better" off road, Purely down to the driver. I just like the freedom to look ahead more.

So we will get the same results if we swap cars? That'll be the test, and one I have done having owned both and used in the same situations. And I posted earlier how that turned out!

I'm up for this, perhaps we could get a number of members to join in so we get a more balanced result?

There is a flaw in this. My 110 is not adapted to be driven using eyeballs.
