Yesterday reverse gear was fine, today I drove for about 7 miles and then started to reverse into a space. This caused a grinding noise but no engagement of reverse. The reversing lights come on but nothing else happens. There is a very slight attempt to move backwards but then "the grind"!
Having pushed the landy out of the parking bay, I drove home without any problem, all forward gears ok.
On getting home-----no reverse, just a "the grind" when I attempted to reverse.
It is a 53 reg Freelander 1, manual gearbox.
Any serious ideas please

Lift the gearlever boot and check there’s nothing stopping the stick moving into reverse.

Get under and check the linkage is free - squirt of oil helps.

Watch the final part of the linkage above the gearbox as someone moves the stick. More oil.

Check the gearbox oil level, or just change it.

If none of the above helps, I guess it’s gearbox out time.
