LT 85 gearbox problem with reverse

I've got a problem selecting reverse gear in my snatch landrover (lt 85 gearbox). All the forward gears work and I can push the gearstick down and across to where reverse is but then I can't push it up into reverse.

Does anyone know what the problem might be?

why down and across ,its just across ,if the other 2 selector shafts arent completely in neutral reverse wont move

Sorry about that - I meant down as in pushing the gearstick downwards (the mechanism that stops you putting it in reverse accidentally).

theres a sprung latch on reverse that you push against which is straight across ,does stick move or is jammed

It goes the full distance leftwards (towards the passengers seat) but will not move forwards (towards the dash) to engage reverse.

check other shafts are in line as inter locks between shafts stop one moving if others arent in line

OK, is there a guide on how to do that? Do I need to remove anything from the top of the gearbox?

you can remove top but be careful as detent springs sit half in top and half in case ,get new gasket first ,ive rebuilt hundreds of lt85s so should be able to help

hi, i think it is the same gearbox in my lightweight after a 200tdi conversion. I had trouble selecting reverse but adjusted the reversing light switch and it went straight in no problem.
