Hi All, got LR90 V8 which is great, however, due to fuel cost (dont want LPG), i'm going to replace the engine with a diesel. My question is, what diesel engine alternatives are there to 200/300tdi? I still need 4 wheel drive, but i'm rather keen to fit a car diesel engine into my LR 90. I'm thinking Vauxhall/Ford /Peugeot DTI engine?

I realise there will be many issues such as fit, mounts, gearbox etc, but will replace or modify as required.

Has anyone attempted this? I'm not easily offended so would appreciate your comments, advice, abuse etc :D

Many thanks.....

Steve parker (and i'm sure lots of others cheaper) do a range of kits for fords. Isuzus are a popular conversion, and i have seen a 6.2l gmc in a 90 before (beast!) - the isuzu's are prolbly the most popular non landy conversion though.

Just out of interest, why not a 200?

thats handy

all the sensible people would get LPG fitted

all the people with too much time on their hands would convert a perfectly good and probably very saleable V8 into a 200/300 bodge

only a fool would think about fitting a diesel engine from a car such as those you have mentioned

welcome to LZ

Do a 200/300 TDI,forget the rest - they all will be hassle to sort out.The TDI is just swopping over parts, not really even a conversion.Your insurance company will recognise it,you can run it on BIO and when you want to sell it someone will want it.Plus the TDI is making max torque by 1750 rpm,a smaller car derived engine will struggle at low revs to get the thing moving.Rusty TDI Disco's are aplenty, use what you need and E-Bay the rest.

and as sean says, quite rightly, don't bother converting a petrol to diesel, just flog it and get a diesel or do an LPG conversion and keep the nice driving characteristics of petrol!

think i might start one of those pertitions to ban the fitment of non land rover engines - and replacing a v8 with a horrid puny car diesel engine will be punished by public flogging

Thanks for all of your replies. Just wanted to test the water to see if anyone had used a diesel car engine as opposed to the usual route. My current V8 engine needs a bottom up re-build, so re-build (or new engine)plus buying and fitting a LPG system is just too expensive for me.

Not wishing to be flogged, i've decided to go 300TDi as i know of a good one that will not cost me an arm/leg etc. Have read some of the excellent threads concerning 300TDi conversions so gonna bit the bullet.

Thanks......:D
