Hi all, next hurdle to overcome, I dropped the original radiator into my 2A V8 hybrid, which I've got back to after too long, only to find that the connection for the bottom hose on the radiator wants to go through the fan belt!
My radiator is in need of a recore at least so is only fit for the trial fit purpose so I'm wondering if there is another rad that will fit without modification for this application?
I already have an electric fan with thermo switch ready to fit in front of the rad as there's not room behind, all I need now is a suitable radiator.

Iirc series 1 rads are the same as early s2, but the bottom stub is on the other side of the lower tank, ie left instead of right.

There is also the option of the 6 pot rad, not seen one myself nut might be different?
 
I thought about maybe a 6pot rad but I haven't seen one either, I need the bottom hose connection on the right to connect to the water pump, one solution would be to bring the connection out of the bottom of the rad instead of the back, all I'd need would be a 32mm od elbow off a scrap rad.

Found a picture of a 6 pot rad and the bottom connection is on the left so no good it seems the original rad will be OK for capacity will need to have a chat with my local radiator man and see if he can make a suitable mod, maybe blank of the existing connection and bring an elbow out from the base?

My early s2 rad has the outlet stub on the drivers side, a short 90 deg silicone hose connects it to the watwer pump on the tdi, is yours different?

On mine the bottom hose connection is straight, facing back towards the engine and like I said is in direct line with the fan belt for the water pump :-( I have seen pictures of series rad where the bottom connection is an elbow facing out to the offside so maybe there are different versions out there?

I think thats how mine is to, will have to see if I can find a pic, I know it was a tight fit and an arse to find a suitable hose for, in the end I found a used silicone hose off a Cat truck engne that fitted perfectly.
 
I'm now at the point where I need a radiator, engine runs after replacement ignition amp fitted, brakes all plumbed up and bled, gearbox tested with a jury rig of assorted plastic pipes and a garden hose for cooling!
The rad which came out has a straight bottom hose connection facing towards the engine but directly at the water pump belt so is no good for this application, someone must have resolved this issue please help!

Why not try posting in the V8 engine sub forum under engines you may get more response from folks with V8's fitted.
 
Some pics might be helpfull...loads of V8's have been fitted so cant be that difficult to solve...
 
Here we go, not a lot of room to get a good angle, if the bottom connection was angled down a bit and towards the off side a bit I guess I could get something to fit and I'd likr the connections to be a bit bigger so as not to restrict flow, ideally the top hos stub needs to be a bit over to the nearside as well.

Don't know if this helps but I've a 3.5 efi in a 90 and the outlet hose is S shaped with a bend on the rad end; it might be a disco hose as the engine came from one.

Can you not get a silicone hose to fit?
 
Thanks for your input but my problem is the shape of the bottom hose stub which points directly at the v belt so there's no space for a bend in the hose to clear the fan belt, the series rad is much narrower than a 90 cross flow one, I have seen pictures of series radiators whith the bottom hose connection facing outwards instead of the straight one I have which may be a way around my problem, I really need to borrow one for a trial fit before I go ahead and buy one.

Thanks just had a look and it would appear to be a viable unit, wonder why mine has the straight pipe, then again mine seems to have been a bit of a changeover model, one of the last with the lights in the grill and fastenings a mixture of unified and BS threads which always made for interesting maintenance!

Hope it helps - you might be able to pick one up used or cheaper elsewhere, that was just the first place that showed a picture of mine (tho I have found their site to be excellent and quick). Plus 1 on the mixture of threads - never know what you'll get until you try and replace one! Good Luck.
 
Price looked pretty good and I've used them in the past so I went ahead and ordered it along with a bottom hose to help with the installation, I've already got a variety of adaptor hoses and silicone so hopefully I'll get it to fit!

Update, radiator fitted and plumbed in, bottom hose was still a bit of an epic fit but got there in the end, modified RR bottom hose a U bend and a bit of straight silicone, fan installed and wired up, been sorting the fuel pump into the tank, fitted now ready to wire up, pipework in place just waiting for a fitting for the return hose and it's done!
