I have this problem also but mines a manual gearbox. Im stationary in neutral with handbrake on. The cog light flashes when i press the button to engage low box then message select neutral appears. Tried wiggling lever but nothing.

That could be either the neutral switch or the plastic actuator within the selector mechanism that operates the switch. Mine had broken up. Ended up bridging out the neutral switch to be able to use low range. Just had to be very careful not to press the button when moving just in case it tried to select low when above 5mph!
