Low mpg TD4 diesel

With the Bosch MAF the setting 3 is exactly the same as my Pierburg on 8.

I stopped using Millers additive as wife can't stand the smell which lingers around.

I only use the cheapest Halford's or Tesco's 2-stroke oil now -200ml per 50 litre diesel.

If you'e not already using 2-stroke - give it a try.

When I got mine I was getting 28mpg. I put in some wynns injected cleaner for diesel and my next fill up I did 35mpg. After a relatively long drive but with some around town crazy driving I just got 40.5mpg

Best cure for low mileage TD4 = slow down and be consistent..

I live in south west London, with an auto 53 plate TD4. I normally get around 280miles /tank when using it day to day around town.

However on a run to Birmingham and back I achieved 270miles on half a tank!

Kept the speed to 60 - 65mph and light throttle pressure to maintain the speed.

Bingo.

Right. Just bought a Synergy 2e so just have to fit it.

Bought the Pierburgh MAF too & have been advised by supplier to try setting 4 or 5 and see how I get on.

Just fitted a Synergy2e today to my 2006 TD4 auto.
Bought it to improve mpg and cure a slight hesitation when pulling away, plus the auto holding onto the gears.
So far it seems to have cured the hesitation and holding onto the gears but yet to see what improvement there is to mpg.
Any advice what's the best settings to get the the best mpg?

I've set to 7. I'd really appreciate your feedback as mine's a 06 Auto too.

Mine also seems to hold onto gears - especially when cold. It will be interesting to see if the 2e helps. Come to that. what makes the box 'decide' to change? the box or a the engine management system?

Tesco have 10w 40 or 5w 30 on sale at the moment for £10 for 4 ltrs, grabbed myself a couple for the XEDI at that price.

Had mine for 11 months now. When I first had her she gave me between 32-34 mpg.

Now, with new tyres with correct pressures, a new crankcase breather, new exhaust backbox, regular addition of 'Lucas Oils' UCL, diff oil change, engine oil and filter change, even running on ASDA's diesel, I regularly get 39-41 mpg around town.

Recently changed the hoses to silicon types, but still running the EGR as per BMW spec!

I agree with Singvogel about travelling at 60 rather than 70, and long haul/constant speed journies sees a return of 46-48 dependant on the number of passengers and luggage weight.

Basically, I'm happy!!

HI. I've had some help from Singovel in the past ( always good) so I'll put in my penny worth. I have a 2002 TD4 auto and I get around 30/32 normal driving and 36/38 on long runs, so I am surprised you think the Auto. is hard on fuel. p.s. 3 door. Malcolm.

I have found a massive difference in MPG as to how i drive mine. If i try and drive it like a normal car it seems to drink diesel.
I have started driving a lot more sensible. I only use the brakes in emergencys, I leave a bigger gap on the motorway because most traffic seems to slow down and speed up. If i slow down i use more diesel speeding back up so i just keep at a constant speed. Normally only just below the limits but just not accelerating as fast or breaking hard. My last brim to empty was 40MPG using shell diesel and a 250ml of atf in my tank. I thought that was quite good as i work right in the centre of town and am often in stop start traffic and I do tow at least once a week.

Hi all.

On a recennt trip down south to Dover i did 320mls after i brimmed it before the journey.

It took £51.00 of fuel to get it back to the same spot in the neck of the filler, does anyone know that equates in Imperial?

With good advice from this site..

EGR bypass, Inlet manifold cleaned out and 2 stroke in the tank

Different vehicle.

65 MPH unless in traffic on the motorway (stop-start)

We need to know the price per L or the number of L you put in. Any one value will allow us to work out the mpg.

Better to record miles and liters

Divide litres by 4.546
Divide miles by that figure

Divide trip mileage (say 320) by litres added (say 36.00)

Multiply by 4.54 (litres to Gallons conversion) and there's the mpg.

320 divided by 36 = 8.88 miles to the litre

8.88 multiplied by 4.54* = 40.35* mpg

(very little point in taking it further than two decimal places for practical reasons)

PS. This is an actual calculation from my Td4, with manual gearbox.

Excellent result that -

just a smidgeon (ye olde imperial unit) under 7 L/100Km.

Anyone know when we are going to finish with these old fashioned miles then?

I'd like to travel faster - 112kph seems so much more than dreary old 70mph.

We could change to driving on the right (correct) side of the road at the same time too.

That would cheer us all up as it would be like being on holiday every day.

Maybe the weather would improve as well.

Mmm - maybe something a tad wrong with the philosophy of that perhaps.

You can do all that when you are Independent as per your leader

I don't think we will change. All those signs will need replaced with km versions. Would cost far too much money. Same as changing over to driving on the wrong side of the road.

You're more than likely right Hippo - but I think we are still designing road junctions in the UK with the possibility in mind.

I remember when Sweden changed over to the right side of the road (wrong side?) - but they were in a crazy situation where they already had left-hand drive cars, but drove on the left - that was really weird.
