My 97 300dti has run perfect until today. The fuel got low (but not for the first time) and I filled it up (well, 30squids worth). Now when accelerating fairly smartish the power just switches off and blue smoke comes from exhaust. If you take your foot off the throttle, it ticks over perfectly. If you gently open the throttle it will slowly accelerate up through the gears ok. But anytime you accelerate normally it just dies. Now would/could this be air in the injectors? I bled the fuel pump as per Haynes, but havent touched the injectors. When parked up the engine will run perfectly at full throttle. :confused: Also could this be related to the "idontknowwhatitscalledbutitsepatateswaterfromfuel" thingy, which i was told a couple of months ago needed cleaning. What do you have to do to do this and is it easy, and do i need to buy anything before I attempt it?Would either of these cause my symptoms?:confused:

It sounds to me like there's every chance you have a partial blockage in the fuel supply. This is what I would do:

1. Change the fuel filter and do a testdrive;

2. Locate, dismount and clean the fuel sedimenter and do a test drive;

Do a search on here for 'sedimenter' for instructions

Cheers & good luck

Yep, thanks for that. I did no.1 and its running perfect (well as good as before). cheers

Hi there Chris, just to be clear for me, does that mean that you are satisfied that she is running right again now??

Assuming your answer is a big yes - have you done any other mods to her, eg de-catt the exhaust, de-EGR the engine etc. These are cheap to do and make a significant difference in the efficient running of your vehicle.

I just filled up my '98 Tdi 300 auto today and after doing the calcs I can confirm that on the last tankfull (which comprised 30% town, 60% A road, 10% towing 1ton) she averaged 33mpg !!! Not bad I reckon.

Cheers
Dave
