hello,
i just bought a 2003 freelander 2.5k v6. a week after purchase, the land rover dealership found a coolant leak and replaced the manifold and thermostat. the coolant is still leaking. anyone got any ideas?

head gasket? or
overheating and pushing the coolant out through the header tank or
split header tank or
nackered header tank cap

get them to pressure test the coolant system and do a sniffer test and replace the header tank cap anyway.

then get ya money back for the manifold and thermostat and buy yoself a remote electric water pump.

what is an electric water pump and what should i do with it once i get it? also, i've heard these horror stories about people needing new engines after coolant leakes into system. should this be something to worry about? and sorry for pestering you with another question... why should i get my money back for the maniforld and therm.? do u think they did an incorrect fix in the first place and if so, should i still be trusting them with my car?

Do YOU think they did a good job?

I base my comments on the facts that...
1) you took it to a dealer to fix a coolant leak.
2) they relaced the manifold and thermostat.
3) it still leaks!

Thats good value for money - aint it?

for an electric water pump - do a search here for "electric water pump" or "EWP" or "Craig Davies".

oh and welcome to Looneyzone! (dont let on yu are a merkin)

Can you see any physical leaks? How much coolant lost? It could be there is still air lock in the system. It will get pushed out eventually and it looks like something is leaking as you will see level drop in the tank.
but yes, go back to dealer who fixed it before its too late...

haha, i appreciate the help guys.
1. what's a merkin?
2. purchased the car on 7/13/07, car was sent to the land rover service center and fixed 7/23/07. coolant is low (was almost empty before i refilled it two days ago), but no sign of leak... is this soon enough to take back to dealership where car was purchased, or take back to service center?

What's a "merkin" ? YOU're a Merkin, but don't let on .... in case anyone notices and gives you a hard time

Take no crap from stealers (main dealers).
If they take money for fixing something, that's a contract. If it isn't fixed they broke the contract.

BE SMART!
If you think the water is leaking from (say) the water pump, do NOT say "I want you to replace the water pump", because if they do that they have fulfilled their part of the deal, even if that wasn't where the water was leaking from.

Smarter to say I think it's leaking water ... please have a look at it, gimme a call with a quote for the fix .... and then if they do work that does NOT fix it, THEY have a problem, not you. They quoted to FIX it, and fix it they must.

But they will be stealing from you anyway. All dealers are stealers.

Anyway, assuming you topped it up and it isn't needing an air-bleed, don't go near a dealer unless you need to top it up frequently. Remember not to OVERfill the header tank because any excess WILL be ejected. Fill to the correct level only, and it may need a little top-up every day for a few days while it settle down and purges the air out. Add a few drops of dishwashing liquid detergent to the first water you add.

Also remember to top up with a water-antifreeze-anti-corrosion mix.

Now you know!

I think you should keep calm, and check the coolant level every day BEFORE you start the engine. Do the oil too just in case there's a BIG problem - like the missing water ending up in the oil.

I think in a few days it will have settled down and be fine. If not, THEN it's time to hit the dealer who sold it to you.

Ok, i took the car to the dealership. they did a pressure test, could not find any leaks. they said it's most likely air pockets. good news? i didnt get charged for the top off of coolant they gave me vehicle. lol

Hi, I have got a 2004 1.8 Freelander that's just ticked over 100000 miles. It's had the Inlet manifold done and recently the cam belt water pump and auto tensioners changed after i notice it loosing coolant rapidly. It is still losing coolant but I don't know where from, any ideas??

Head gasket. Check pressures.
Water bottle. Look for signs of cracking.
Pressure cap on bottle.
how do I go about checking head gasket pressures? There is no signs of over heating even on long drives,, no mayo residue in the oil. Only traces of water in the engine bay are around the manual transmition and over the oil filter. Could these be the cause?

Check the radiator, as that's in front of the engine. You could do a compression test, but normally a fire ring leak is self evident. ;)
