Looking for my perfect series

Quick update on my search - having put feelers out on Facebook LR groups - I was contact by a few owners.

One in particular who is selling his 1971 S2a petrol. 3 owners from new, whom are all local and well known to him. The second one (whom he bought it from) had kept it for 28years!

Upon buying the car rebuilt the car completely when he bought it over 10years ago: new galv chassis (original one was too far gone), restored BH (rust cut out and replace w steel panels... no filler), new electric loom, new braking system, parabolic suspension, new seats, engine decoked, gearbox taken appart, a fairey overdrive was fitted, new starter, dynamo etc, etc....

Hes put a lot of time and love in this car and is only selling it in now as he bought another British classic car that he wants to restore.

It’s not a beauty queen and the body has chips and scratches as a well used car should have but it’s a sound and honest car. Its been roll painted quite a few times and has a lot of patina !

The price is pretty good and he lives 80miles away, which is a certain added bonus.

I am due to get a few more pics and videos today, but it could be the one. We’ll have to figure out how a collection can be arranged with the current lockdown - as I am not sure whether buying a new car constitutes an exception for leaving your house.

Nice read indeed. Very knowledgeable. Obviously some of the pages were written a while ago when I read prices referred (£2-3k for a nice example... not anymore)
He has been in business for donkeys years, and isn't bothered about updating websites, or advertising. He has plenty of work by word of mouth to last until he retires.

Looking forward to a couple of pics...

No Problem with a Series diesel driven mine frm Tenerife to Scotland and all over Spain in between. Its a soft top, and lives outside, again no probs. B3E77369-89E5-4C5E-AAE4-DCBA064C103A.jpeg

Sounds good. Keep us posted.

That’s the car - the seller sent me a video, the car is very clean... needs a bit of cosmetic TLC but just the honest car I was looking for.
I am calling the vendor tomorrow to arrange the details... not sure how the delivery / collection will happen w the lockdown - to be continued.

Looks great! I do think the late 2a grill looks cool. And you get a muff as well!
Good luck.

I would agree with this, my diesel has been to spain and back with no problems and again is a softop that live outside year around.

They do indeed and I retro fitted one to my sereis 3 for that reason, they are a long way from cheap due to their scarcity but it was worth it.

That looks pretty good from the outside.

You say it has a galv chassis, and the bulkhead has been rebuilt, was the bulkhead also galved? if not has it been thoroughly wax treated inside? Not a deal breaker if the condition is good but if you go ahead with it one of the first things you will want to do it thoroughly wax the bulkhead internals if it is not galv.

Well, that didn’t take long... Having barely just put a deposit on the car, I am already looking on various websites for parts that I can get to make her look the way I want.

Although I want to be using the cab and soft tops during spring/summer, I also want to get her a hard top for autumn/winter that will make her look like that.
I managed to identify a safari roof with alpine windows already, but can’t seem to find side panels with clean straight corners. All the ones I can find on eBay or other websites seem to have curved corners with rubber seals.

Any idea how I could source the straight ones?

Many thanks

Be careful with those late 2A Grilles. It is known that they are valuable and they can get stolen.

My Series 3 has one fitted. The Land Rover badge that holds it on is held in place with pin hex security screws. Hopefully that makes it a little more difficult to steal.

I had sliding windows from masai fitted to my old defender and they were good quality but they had rounded corners on the frame

I have been in touch with the owner of that car:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Land-Rov...756314?hash=item28a66b85da:g:JzAAAOSwZeBf-zOC

Very honest car. He sent me 10min worth of videos going all around the car. He’s an engineer at rolls Royce and has been tinkering w series for nearly 20years. That car is mechanically sound, and although the chassis and BH are still original it doesn’t show sign of serious rust.

Not sure whether the price feels fair - pretty much everything on the power train has been changed, new brakes, tyres, suspensions (parabolic)... list is quite long.

What I like about that car is that it’s a good base to build on... and leave me a chunk of money to improve it overtime if I want to. I am just not sure whether I can live with the idea of a car that has a modified engine.

OSR wheel cylinder or hub seal dead as backplate covered on oil/fluid, been like it some time as even the tyre inner wall is covered.
OSR chassis loom looks very poor.
Exhaust looks well bodged, multiple different sections/clamps/diameter pipes even two different types of flex pipe.
Front diff wet, possibly engine oil.
Gearbox cross member soaked in oil, so either crank rear main seal (most likely) or gearbox oil leak.
Rear cross member caked in mud, so it has seen some action.
Just looking at them pics I would say that has not had a spanner on it for quite some time, or if it has he does some serious off roading.

I am not saying he does not work at RR, but would suggest he may in fact be the janitor:D

I like the fact it has an aerial:D
