Just stick a little info on here and say a bit "Hi" to all.

my names mike and the reason I have joined is because I am researching before I put my hand in my pocket and go out and buy a landy, which I am looking for primarily for expedition trips, Safari and desert. Don’t want to buy the wrong thing!

I currently own a Subaru Forester, not exactly the most competent vehicle off road, but capable (on road is superb), but its as fragile as a kitten in the real rough stuff and having had problems getting beached due to low clearance I need something better.

get a 130 with either a 200 or 300 Tdi engine in, sure you'll get lots of different opinions here soon

hi and a 130 is too long for off roading shorter the better for the real rough stuff! If you beach a forrester 90 is the way to go!

"expedition trips, Safari and desert"

so you'd be happy to go on an extended trip with the limited amount of kit a 90 could carry ?

cheers chaps, budget is upto 6K with another £2-4k for goodies. principally a decent roof rack, snorkel, winch, good tyres and a few bits of protection.

I've been looking at a 110's as the 90 might be a bit small for the journey I have in mind, there will only be two of us though.

I am planning two trips over the next couple of years, the first i'll be taking my Forester as its mainly road driving and will be a circuit of Norway, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Germany, Holland, Belgium and France. The second trip will be in 2008 and will be a tour of northern Africa, basically, france, spain, morroco, algeria, libya, egypt, jordan, syria, turkey and back to the UK and I dont think my forester is up for this!

Time and money will tell!

Well if your in Spain give us a knock and we will have a cuppa...
And i think its gotta be a 110 for those sort of trips.Im sure you will find one and quiet possibly already kitted out, might be a good idea to ask in the expedition thread as well for any advice of what to or not to take etc.
When im trawling the net in search of my possible project...some sort of cheap lhd Disco or Series but with extra seats...if i see anything i will send you the details and then you can have a look.
Hope this helps

Yep a turbo is out of the question as well as I need to be able to fix it. I want some thing older with fancy electronics. Something you can hit with a big hammer if something goes t@ts up!

That motor on ebay wont stay at hat price for long, the book price for a W reg is £7500.

Just out of interest can the ECU in the landy be connected to?

The subaru ECU can be connected to via a cable to a laptop, and you can read the parameters in the ECU, such as throttle position, water/oil temp, turbo boost. Plus the faults can be read. You can read them but not change them.

Can you do this with Landy's? I will have a laptop with me throughout.

I know only kidding..not..no seriously if you have got that sort of access it will be invaluable Keep a running report going via the expedition threads, like a check in every night and also gives you a bit of security, if several thousand landrover owners know where you, are at a certain time, in a certain place,if something did go wrong in the middle of a desert for example at least there would be people who knew where you had been the night before and where you were planning on going.
and you would have all the tech advice on tap....and it would be really cool to see the pics.
I think that could be very interesting bit like one of the reality tv thingys.
Oh and have you seen the suitcase solar chargers for laptops etc on ebay?
In fact there is loads of solar stuff on there battery chargers etc.
Again hope it all helps

whatever landy I get I will be getting a Dual battery charger and some decent batteries, and if I need an uprated alternator.

I have dual battery setup in the forester with one in the boot, but I needed an uprated alternator as the OEM one wasnt up to the job.

you can load a 90 but for the milage you want i would agree a 110.Its best you do a couple of trial runs to find what you and your mate will and wont need.
