Aye you can rent real man sized bottles from the likes of boc ! There is alot of chat about it over at mig welding . Co. Uk was it 15 quid rental a year and 40 to fill or The other way round I can't remember

Might need a longer hose though.

The gas will get expensive ! I Havbt used gas yet ! Im not overly worried about inclusions when im welding scrap plate on a bench !
 
Have a chat with a local pub landlord, Del - They may be able to do a deal with you for a co2 bottle - see if you can find an empty one, and just pay the landlord for swaps. Usually find them in the classifieds!

As with all welding, practice makes perfect! Keep it clean and be confident and you can't go wrong with mig!

Do you mean you are practising mig welding with no gas??

If he gets the hang of it without gas, he will be a demon with it turned on!:D

He may get away with it if there are no draughts - it only keeps the weld pool clean. Never be perfect, but if he gets the general hang of it without.....

If he learns without gas he'll have to learn again with it, i spent years welding with straight Co2 when i went over to argashield i thought ide completely lost the abillaty to weld it was so different

You should have seen me when I started welding again. I was a panel beater for years, changed career and never touched a welder for 8 years.....first time back on the welder was erm...interesting! :rolleyes:

Comes back after a while! I was weird when I first started welding, as I took to gas, but had trouble with mig - usually other way round.
 
any half decent welder should come with CO2 and argon bottle attachments, my 180A did and thats only a siegen produces OK welds does the job i need it too lol (gets better after i have been using it for a while but thats just me not doing enough welding)

With loom? had night off as have two wires to engine to find-think they go to Data link connector 1 (obd1 with 3 diagnostic ports)
three alt wires to sort and waiting for relays to arrive.

Other cars a little as have golf with ccm failure tomorrow/family electrical business dead at moment.

I'm working in my shen with no draughts and I've only had a couple of shots. I'll be sure to use gas next time - I'd read that it was ok to get used to the torch and the movements without gas.

I'll pick up some more gas anyway.

Where do you guys get your steel from ? Local motorfactors does it but it's a chugging pain to get to I end up using Bnq which is expensive ! My local hardwear store is a haven for good tools a a reasonable price but little on hardwear or consumables :(

sheet metal dealer,manufacturing scrap bin at steel pressing or casing factory or agri/mech merchants
 
just a quickie to the welding brethrin here

ive got to replace an outrigger on a disco tomorrow and im spoilt fer choice as to what would do a better (more solid job ) arc welder or mig welder

im great with both but tend to lean towards the arc welder what would you do ???

sorry if i seem to be hijacking the thread here but i need to know fast:D:D:D:D:D

id find an old 55gal oil drum at the scrappys and practise on that as its roughly the same steel gauge as body pannels and by the time youve used the entire barrel youll be confident enough to tackle anythin within reason

ps barrels make good transit inner wheelarch replacements when cut right and are also good for replacing spare wheel wells in mondeo boots lol:D:D:D

i either use a local steel merchant (IS&G steel)it i need full lengths or if i only need little bits i use a local fabrication place who normally has lumps kicking around, if its thin sheet i have used a local autopanels place (maldon autopanels)

personally i would use MIG i have used MIG (with CO2) to weld landy chassis and never had any strength problems, plus i did a damn sight neater job welding the 110 crossmember onto the back of the RRC chassis than whoever welded the last one on my series! that was a right balls up!

cheers mate i aint gorra single piece of paper sez i can do it but ive been welding for the last 15 years now so its almost second nature (havent done pigeon **** or hedgehog welds for years now ) lmao :D:D
 
Good places to get metal n bits n bobs is go to yr local industrial estate, have a chat to the lads in engineering workshops an places like that thay should be ok.
They only scrap it, another place is the local scrap metal merch.
If you do need new stuff a body panel place will sell you sheets n strips of metal.
failling that "FWB"..
