Disco 2 Leaky sunroof guide?

The rear sunroof which worked when I bought it and didn't leak, now leaks with water coming into the cabin through the switch, and will only tilt making access to the drains and seals difficult. For info this is the first time I have opened it since buying as I fondly imagined that this would prevent it leaking.

I have done some extensive searches on the site and there are many many threads where people are told to go away and do a search, one or two useful threads and one very promising link to a full photographic guide to stopping leaks. Sadly the links and subsequent ones are all dead. Does anyone have a current link or copy?

Some of us had to have them even though they didn’t won’t them wouldn’t use them, mine are only open once a year for around 10 minutes to clean the glass seal and then closed, so luckily don’t leak.

Thanks yes, though originally Mantamad's guide came with pictures, which I find really useful. Decent Youtube guide even better.

Until I can take it apart I've no idea what I will need, but I am very tempted to fit the upgraded drains anyway while I have it all in bits. Cheers

Here we go again

, someone that doesn’t understand the design of the sunroof, and the purpose of the two drain tubes and why they are only positioned at the front of the sunroof.

Done it many times, use the search button and you shall find, as I’ve giving up on repeating myself.
Perhaps you would like spare some of your wisdom on stopping leaks from sunroofs and help the OP.

I stripped two sunroofs into pieces to make a working one for a mates D1 using with just a bit of engineering logic.

Well if you read the original post, he said he has done an "extensive search" and either the previous queries were met with "do a search"... or the links to photo guides are all dead. Personally, I've never stripped or repaired a leaky sunroof as I've never used them. I like the light they allow into the cabin but that's about it. When mine leaked, I sealed them up permanently. Considering I've never repaired a leaky sunroof to working condition but you have - and the OP's "extensive search" has drawn a blank, maybe you could share your vast knowledge of the subject with him.

Having not taken one apart yet, I lack your experience of them and and would not claim to fully understand the design. However, I understand that the drains are there to remove water that may collect when the sunroof is in tilt, or moved to tilt. I also understand that they are prone to snapping, in which case why would I not wish to replace them with more robust items whilst I have the opportunity? My leak is probably the frame to roof seal which will need a full strip to fix and at least a day of decent weather.

Personally, for peace of mind I would do everything I could when the roof lining is out as I dont plan on taking it out again.
preventative measures.

I plan on doing mine on a nice sunny day if we ever get one!

The roof bars will get new seals as they can sometimes leak.
New Frame to roof seals plus extra tiger seal!
new drain plugs (whether they are broken or not.)
then check by pouring water all over the roof while the roof lining is out just incase its coming through the from windowscreen.

Im sure someone will have something to say but do what ever you want as its your car

then when it goes wrong come back on the forum and ask for help. Haha
Failing that seal the thing up and never use it again!

Don't forget it's a Land Rover. It can tell the difference between someone using a watering can or hose pipe to test their handiwork and proper rain

As a temporary measure I sealed the outer edge of the outside plastic lip with silicon as there were some clear gaps. So far it has been through some serious showers and not a drop has got in. As the roof flexes I suspect that this fix won't last, so I have up my sleeve some Gorilla Clear Repair Tape. This stuff sticks really well, is strong, waterproof and UV resistant, and is about as wide as packing tape. I'll start by sealing over the plastic lip, and if that doesn't work I'll seal the edges of the glass as well. A bit like sealing the entire thing with car wrap, but only sealing the bits that need it. My son has used it on his Defender's roof to seal the top seam and it has worked very well and is pretty much invisible unless you look for it.
