Hi

I will be visiting the lakes next week and just wondering if anyone knows of any freelander-friendly lanes that I could try???

I have an OS map and can see a few lanes, just doing a bit of research before we leave.

Thanks!

If you can read your map you'll be able to find the lanes I've PM'd you:D

Do not drive the Old Coach Road between Keswick and Ullswater though. It has the mutha of all holes on it which has made it unpassable.

Now the deal is you come back and post some pictures when you're back.;)

Cheers pal!!!

Pretty sure ive ID'D them on the map, will try and take lots of pics and post em up on return

you F%^$ Nugget. its people like you who get lanes closed for good. its no wonder people dont share lanes if this kind of thing keeps happening  If you want "the mother of all holes" i suggest you pay £20 and go to an offroad site where you can wreck your expensive toy.

 steady on !! deputy dowg  am afraid your barking up the wrong tree there mate :) there is two tails to every story and here is my take on it ,now please sit up and digest the facts before casting judgement ,theres a good boy ;)
the lane in question is council (maintained) ,not very well in my opinion
according to the local cyclists the affore mentioned hole only appeared about a month ago!!! and the only help available was the farmer at a price ,he was well known in the vicinity for his business accumen !!
according to the bikers a previous hole not 500 metres away was filled in at the personal cost of a local trials club!!! why not the council i hear you bark !!

now the local farmer is only to pleased to help ,you couldn`t meet a more friendly fella the above farmer did in fact fleece me for the price of two sheep( his usual fee as he put it ) for offering his tractor hire service, nice chap, considering the weather an all would ewe venture out to offer assistance i ask ewe ?
on reflection , the ruts in the road did match the width of his tyres on the tractor !! funny that
so to recap on this bone of contention , i did not create the motha hole and i am not in any way responsible for it in any way shape or form ,so i fail to see how i ,in your opinion( !!!!:p pah )are the type of person that is giving this pasttime a bad press. On the contrary i will be in fact contacting the council first thing monday to report the situation to see if any maintanace will be forthcoming , hopefully i will be in a long list of RESPONSIBLE people that have already called in to raise the matter :p :p

The hole has been developing for some time now, we reported it during the summer as a potential problem and in December as an issue.

TRF, GLASS and CRAG have requested we keep off the road until a proper repair can be done, which will hopefully be sanctioned soon. The Highways department of Cumbria County Council have no money for repairs to unsurfaced roads so hopefully the local Volunteers can get this done.

The original hole was repaired about 20 years ago, but has now given way it used tree trunks branches etc with stone over the top. We are trying now to source Geotextile fabric and hopefully stone from the nearby quarry. Should be being discussed at the next Access Commitee so watch this space.

But if we don't get the agreement there is no doubt it will TRO'd and lost for our use, so please voluntary restraint from all and spread the word. !

The Old Coach Road has been well trashed at the weekend by a bunch of Disco 3s :( :( :(

They ignored the LARA voluntary restraint signs and duly got very stuck at the hole. The subsequent recovery has trashed the road, the side drains etc etc.

Lots of ammo for the Bobblies here, so anticipate they will demand a permanent TRO as we cannot be controlled by voluntary means !!

These nuggets also drove the Grizedale lane East - West contrary to LDNP request on the web site.

I give up with Prats like this about we have no chance so like the Dales we will be getting wholesale TRO's before long !
