Right guys and gals

I want to get a land rover discovery for a bit of gentle off roading and to cart my mountain bikes about.

the budget i'm on will only allow me to buy something with the 200tdi or an early 300tdi diesel motor in.

Right you know whats coming lol.

I've heard that the-

200tdi's Have a gearbox fault which will lead to the box being changed ££££££££££££££££
and
300tdi's Have possible loss of 5th gear, head gasket issues and a grey area about the cam belt alignment again £££££££ .

So are these issues fairly commen? and or should i be worring about this?

Or is it the case off for the amount that are sold its just a few teathing problems?????.

Many thanks and your experienced thoughts would be appreciated.
Frank.

The gearbox problem I had on the 200tdi involved it jamming in third. This is terminal and apparently happens if you do a lot of high speed heavy towing (I did). Other than that, the brand new 300tdi I bought was total crap in every possible way, including the cam belt, the auto box, the steering, etc etc. The 200tdi with 100,000 on the clock I replaced it with was noisier and more "agricultural" but much more reliable. Whichever you get, don't go near a Main Stealer - they don't understand anything over six months old, and that's on a good day.

Disco's are great for mountain biking, we got three bikes, three blokes and all our camping and biking kit in for a weekend in wales. Did our riding and also went off road with it all on board. Priceless!!

Why not post your budget? all landies have thier 'Personalities' it's generally up to what you wanna spend...

budget between £2k and £3k ish

Just like any car really,if we listed all the faults and problems we'd never buy anything, the 200 and 300 tdi's are both strong engines with the 200 having slightly less to go wrong as theres less electrics (Egr valve ect).Neither of the gearboxes are excellent but again shouldn't cause to much grief as replacements are easily avalible and cheap enough. However one of the main concerns is Rust especialy in floor and chassis. For 2-3k you should easily pick up a 300tdi but don't rule out a tidy 200 if one comes up as with older vehicles your better off buying on condition rather that age/mileage.
