Yes !! - My experience of starter motors is that, during that time period they were made of proper materials, not reject chocolate like the modern stuff . Saves money too, which is always a bonus !!
So, I'd much rather use old stuff than new stuff - IME, more of the new stuff is, ahem, "rubbish", than the old..... I'm being polite
I'd strip and clean the motor fully, and lubricate it all as you re-assemble it. Use good grease, ( we use Castrol ), and use good contact cleaner, (we use Ambersyl), plenty of vaseline on all the electrical contacts to keep the water out too
