Landrover 88 series 2a - keep or sell?

Hi and welcome!

What a fantastic Landy! You don’t see many in that original condition come up very often! You might find a service and some attention gives a very usable vehicle, as mentioned, but if you want to do a chassis change you could easily head towards the £7-10k mark easily depending on what you change with it. If you do restore, keepnthe bodywork as far as is possible, it’s got history and patina to it, which you cannot buy.

In terms of value, it depends what someone will pay. If you put in an auction, two bidders could really push the price up. Personally, I’d keep it.

Good luck with whatever you do. Keep us updated.
Hi and thank you thats really useful advice.

I'm hoping the chassis does not need to be replaced or only small sections need repairing which I would be thrilled about.

I will certainly keep you all informed

Make it so it works and enjoy it, looks like you have some land so no need to be road legal.
The important thing to remember if it is (for example) worth 5k now, it will still be worth at least that if not more in 5/10 years time, so if you are not desperate for the money have some fun, genuine original low mileage s2 are like rocking horse poo.

Join the series 2 forum, some very knowledgable people on there, who will be able to tell you exactly what you have, they normally have local area meets etc, so you can sweet talk someone to come and have a look and maybe jelp get it running.
Thank you thats really helpful to know.

A few have said its rare to see a 2a cab and with the low millage and unique number plate it really is a keeper.

IThe cab/van/sw tops are just a nut and bolt exercise to change, not counting the rope hooks on the tub.
It is the fact it is original that will make it valuable, original chassis with chassis number visible is pretty rare, as people are obsessed with galv chassis, I reckon in years to come the car with the original chassis will have the greater provenance and therefore be worth more.
Most want shiny paint, real collectors crave originality.

Watch ebay, every now and then a truly nice original slightly beaten up s2 comes up for sale, watch the prices!

There are a hardcore bunch of people out there who want early s2/s2a/s3/90, spend enough time on the forums and you get to know who they are.

Does it really look that bad?

I honestly felt like saying to the farmer, who stores it for me, heres the keys it's all yours
What are the brakes like? If they are crap by modern standards then they are good for a series :p Drive it to the nearest supermarket and jetwash it to death underneath.
From those pictures you've got the makings of a solid nice series.
Congrats in very jealous :)
Por15 or similar for the chassis and dinitrol

Thats the closest I could get underneath today.

Caked in mud and more mud so couldn't see a great deal but overall the chassis doesn't seem too bad.

Apparently it was flooded in Feb and the brakes aren't the best.

Get the jetwash on it and clear all that crap out of the footwells cos that'll hold moisture against the metal and rot it through. Brakes might just need fettling but it looks very tidy to me. You and yer missus should be well chuffed :p

Your absolutely right, i didn't think of the footwells.

We are both excited to see where this journey takes us as this is all completely new to us.

Thanks again for the advice, much appreciated

I'll be honest I don't know what the rules about meeting folk anyway but I'm working the next couple of weekends :(
Quick question......

How can you tell if the miles has gone around the clock?

We believe the 25k mileage is legit however cant be proved as only 1 MOT record in 2005. Its been stored on the same farm for 30 years and its not the biggest farm going.
