Hi Jan, let’s just say they weren’t cheap, I also have a matching Penman trailer which is ‘as new’ the British army evaluated the Landrover Defender and realised they weren’t up to what they required as a fighting vehicle and gave Landrover a specification of what they needed so an upgraded Defender was developed, it has to be superior to the civilian model so this is what I decided to go for, if it’s good enough for the army…. Ex Military Defenders have had a tough life however they’ve been serviced and repaired after every operation far more regular than any civilian model, I’ve only had to do very minor work since we acquired them ( one belongs to my son ) water pump, ‘P’ gasket, fuel tank and major services.
They’re far better than the civilian ones even the tatty ones look cool. Where ever I stop people will ask especially ex sqaddies.
I had an ex military series Landrover 88 in the 1970’s also a series 1, these are another level.

One think I dislike about the Wolf is that it has sliding windows but I guess it is more reliable in combat conditions than the Defenders windows. I don't know if you can do this so well with sliding windows. I do not mind the door handle design of the Wolf as I think it is pretty reliable. I guess I can just remove the windows if I don't like them and the weather is warm enough. The engine on the Wolfs is the 300tdi as far as I am aware of? Is the powertrain the same as the civilian Defender except for the stronger axles? That would be all for now, thanks.

Ride quality… our Bronze Green Ceremonial Defender has a much softer, quieter ride than the NATO Green one, it’s an absolute pleasure to drive whereas the NATO Green one is is hard, louder and more WW2 Jeep like.
The Wolf doors are as the Series models, the sliding windows tend to rattle but an easy fix is new felt runners which are only a couple of quid, they’re a lot easier to slide open than winding down a whole window down to get your arm out plus they don’t flutter, a lot of civilian one have to have draught excluders fitted. The Series style door handles are class, so iconic, much nicer than the later design. The doors split in half so for summer driving you can take the top half off with only two bolts. On some restorations at my local Landrover specialists they have replaced the late style doors with the retro series doors on their rebuilds.
Yes the 300tdi is exactly the same as the civilian ones so parts are exchangeable, there are lots of places that supply Wolf parts.
I looked long and hard before I bought my Wolf, the Civilian Defenders are very nice but with the fancy lights and pimped up fat wheels and tyres, high back seats etc they’re miles away from the original concept. I’m a purist at heart and as far as I’m concerned originality is key so opted for the Wolf, if you decide to buy one make sure you go for a one with a Remus upgrade, they’re the latest model before their sad demise.

They have both soft tops and hard tops 90’s and 110’s even the tatty ones look cool
I suppose ultimately it’s all a matter of taste and what you prefer I’m just a huge Wolf fan, whatever you decide just make sure you buy one with a good rust free chassis and bulkhead, the mechanicals are an easy fix.
