 Can anyone help, i have a 200tdi on a 93 plate, it is overheating when pulling the caravan, have checked and replaced the thermotsat to no avail , it is not losing any water it is like whenever you put the engine under pressure the temp goes up, the cooling fan you can turn freely with the engine not running, so i dont know if its the water pump jiggered, or the cooling fan, or its the rad buggered, can somebody point me in the direction please, thanks mart.

It might well be your rad is full of muck. Take it off and flush it out or try a new one. My 110 used to be like that, ok on the road but I used to use it to tow a mower on my fields and it used to get pretty hot. Cleaned the rad out and problem solved.

thanks for the advice, will clean out rad, and let you know, cheers, mart

As Sean said, make sure that when the engine is up to operating temp, the viscous fan is locked up. In other words, when you stuff a newspaper or similar into it, you cannot stop it. Be very carfeul when doing this test !!!

ermmm i wasnt suggesting having the engine running when you try to turn the fan - just go fer a blat around to get the engine HOT, then pull over turn the engine off and then try to turn the fan

hello sean and hughsey, and biglad, did the fan test when engine was hot and found you can still turn the fan easily, so i take it as the fan is chuffed, also how much for a new viscous unit with fan, cheers, mart

Your viscous fan might well be fooked but you should have enough passage of air over the rad at normal speeds on the road to keep things cool.. I'd still suspect the radiator and possibly a tired water pump.

Before I spent any big money, I would disconnect top & bottom rad hoses and back flush with a hosepipe and a good strong flow of water. It might be that it's cacked-up with rusty crap  :D ;)

Did you solve the problem Mart?

We have just come back from the second holiday and the disco overheated both times. (north Wales and the Lake district - both a bit hilly!) I'm going to clean the rad out first, but did replacing the viscous fan solve the problem completely?

thanks Rob

p.s. my wife refuses to go again, until I've sorted it!

Just returned from the peak district towing the van without my viscous fan fitted. The temperature gauge read normal all the time. So if the rad is ok and the waterpump working fine , you dont need your viscous fan[ at this time of year] 300 tdi.

had exactly same prob when towing our caravan (cracked head first time and then head gasket 2nd time) tried all of suggestions mentioned above. flushed and flushed rad no sign of any muck coming out. eventually put new rad and new viscous hub on and its never overheated since (2 to 3 years ago) gut feeling is that the hub was actually ok but the rad had silted up inside (fins were perfect)
