Land rover discovery got water in the engine what should i do????

i was driving my 1996 land rover discovery through a shallow ford last night and about an hour later the car started cutting out whilst i was driving home. i took the air filter out and it was covered in water!!! what should i do?? will it dry out or is it more serious??

HELP!! just bought the car
 
As the wading depth of a discovery is deeper than a 'shallow ford' then it's probably just a damp filter and not anything more serious, had it have been it would have cut out straight away
 
What he said ^^^. Leave the filter off to dry, the engine might be a spluttery for a bit, that'll clear though. If the engine had a decent drink you'd have stopped dead in the ford'
Take it you're talking about a TDi, not a v8 petrol?
 
Depending on the model you may have a sediment filter under the chassis in the rear which could have been submerged. It shouldn't have let water in, but it may have.

Pop the little bleed screw out of it and drain it, see if there is any water in the fuel.

See if you have the sediment filter thingy first, you may not. If you do, drain it and see if there is any water. Water and diesel don't mix so it will be fairly obvious. Water in a cylinder in an engine is not best as water doesn't compress and can cause damage. Small amounts will cause rough running and large amounts can bend conrods etc.

If you have lots of water in the fuel then you really need to get that out. Draining the tank might be the only option and I certainly wouldn't want to run this until it clears before checking the sediment filter at least. Again, if you don't have one then depending on your ability to look at engine and fuel stuff I would perhaps get someone else involved.

If you put your location in your settings you might find someone on here who is local who could maybe give you a hand in exchange for bacon. I mean, what would you NOT do for bacon?
 
I have been googling and it seems that if I take the drain plug out of the sediment thing it is probably going to snap. The other way is to take the whole thing off of the top but then I need to get replacement o rings. Does anyone know where I can get these O rings from??

how do you know its going to snap. Its drain plug. It was designed to be removed. Just because some people on the internet have had it occur doesnt mean yours will do the same.

People on the net are quick to moan about bad things and rarely post up success :eek:
 
Went back to the car today and there was no water in the sediment filter. checked the air filter and pipework it was bone dry. The engine started and ran perfectly.
