I have a query regarding a Land Rover 2.25 NA Diesel Engine serial number. The serial number on the block is SWnnn (doesn't seem to follow the published lists available on the web) and I cannot find any information out there on this numbering format and am wondering exactly what I have - any advice greatly appreciated.

Agree with Kermit there ,looks like you can see the marks where it was ground off, most likely the engine has been refurbished and those identify the company and the engine number on their books.
Yours does not have the diagonal bracing on the block as does my 5 main bearing so yours will be the 3 main bearing diesel engine , between the core plugs on starter side you might see some cast in numbers and letter which will tell you when engine was made

Four cylinder engines built from 1970 can be fairly accurately dated by reference to the date cast into the side of the block between a couple of core plugs on the manifold side of the block. On some lower engines it can apparently be lower down.

  • The first one or two numbers are the date in the month it was built (1 to 31)
  • The next digit will be a letter (A = Jan, B = Feb etc) The letter I is not used.
  • The last digit is the year, on a 10 year cycle (so 'I' could be 1971, 1981 or 1991.

Thanks for the information much appreciated. Regarding date marks on the block, just underneath the manifold there is a clear D5 and at the base of the block there is a similarly clear 4A3 (raised characters on the block both on the manifold side) - 4A3 = 4th Jan 1973 possibly?
