That won't explain it not starting on petrol though.

The easiest way to check it though is to pull the fuse from the LPG ECU power - as mentioned, LPG ECU's use relays to switch over the injectors - and the petrol side is on the normally closed contact. If the LPG ECU loses power etc, then the default connection is to have the petrol injectors connected, so it will just run on petrol.

If LPG ECU has no power and still won't start on petrol, then it has to be in the petrol system.

Don't know to be honest Marty gas guzzler control is not my strong point. But the LPG ECU must connect to the engine ECU to switch off the petrol injectors when LPG is being used. Seems when petrol is selected the LPG ECU is not carrying out that function. How it does it and what is involved i don't have a clue.

All the LPG systems do is slave off the petrol ECU - they don't take over running of the engine. When running on gas, the LPG ECU shuts off the petrol injector feeds and emulates them to the petrol ECU (so it thinks it's still injecting petrol). The LPG system (if the more common sequential systems) then applies a fiddle factor to the measures petrol injection time, to account for the fact you need a bit more LPG for x quantity of petrol. The LPG ECU then fires the gas into the intake, where it's sucked into the cylinder, boom, and well, that's basically it.

So the fact that it runs on LPG shows that fundamentally the engine ECU is working to run/control the engine.

Which means that your issue is in one of 3 places (in my mind) 1) the LPG ECU, and what's happening is it's not reconnecting the petrol injectors to the petrol ECU when it's not running on gas. This to me is unlikely, as they generally use relays to changeover the signal from 'connected' to 'emulated' with the 'Normally Closed' position (IE relay not powered up) of being set to the petrol injectors being connected. So even if the LPG ECU loses power, then the petrol injectors will still have a connection and allow running on petrol. It's not impossible the LPG system is messing things up, but I'd say it's highly unlikely - especially on all 8 injectors.
#2) is that you have a fuel delivery problem. Either the pump/relay/ECU isn't doing something properly... If the pump is nearly new, and there is fuel at the rail (what fuel pressure do you get when it's running? Even if it's running on LPG, the fuel rail should be pressurised - so it's worth checking that with a gauge, and also seeing what it does when you hit the button to change back to petrol)
#3) your petrol ECU has a weird fault in it.

I somewhat doubt that the petrol ECU is the issue - if you say it's holding the fuel pump relay in when it's running on LPG (which it should do as it thinks it's still running on petrol) then any other problem with the ECU would show on LPG - if it was ignition, crank sensor etc related, as it's all still used when the vehicle is running on gas.

Fuel delivery (somewhere) is my bet. If the pump is running as it should then it's either not producing enough pressure, there's a blocked fuel filter, or maybe even the pressure regulator on the fuel rail isn't working properly...
Put a pressure gauge on the fuel rail and see what pressure you get when you start it up on LPG, and then see what happens when you switch to petrol.

If fuel pressure is in spec, then it points more to the injector side of things. but then again, 8 dead injectors isn't likely, or even enough dead injectors to stop it running badly would be likely - more extremely bad luck..
Thanks for the input mate, I'll check as advised and also check all the electrical connections as the car has been standing for years.I fitted the pump new but it was some time ago.I had the tank off and made sure it was clean I also fitted new fuel lines as they had rusted away, and a new filter. Regards.

Well that's two of us Tony, what was wrong with a couple of SU's;)

Correct i seem to remember spending two quid a day at times on fuel for the E type. Mind you that was about eight gallons. :D
I used to run my S2A quite happily at 56p a litre. Electric fan and 7.00x16. 18mpg at best. 50mph flat out and vibrating like funked washing machine full of towels. I loved that tra'r:D

Not driven an old Landy for a long time. But i do seem to remember staying away from potholes at speed was top priority. Unless you wanted to risk having your arms detaching at the shoulder.

id once parked up at the laundrette in York. Dropped off the stuff and headed off the kurb into the round about and smacked into and lifted a egg shaped concrete bollard out of the ground and rolled over it. Elbows into wheel!! My freshly painted black and white bumper got lifted on side.. I bloody sped with fear of being seen. I say sped off, second gear crunching all the way.. I had a truck cab full roof, sticks and canvas split back door and full rear door all in nato green and black. Never the same each month. Brilliant machine. Tap tap steering!

Once tried to reverse a MKII Jag off the car park of the Saddle pub. Walking to the car there appeared to be nothing behind it, so thought i'd just back onto the road. Bloody bollard had been broken off about 10 inches from it's base slid up the towbar irons and lifted the back wheels off the floor. Had to get lads out of pub to push it off. What a prat i felt.

As per post # 43 I went out today and ,after checking I had good fuel pressure, I pulled every connector I could find. Started it up on gas and then switched over to petrol, bugger me it continued to run. Will wait till its cold and try starting it on petrol.:D Thanks everybody for your help
