ok this is as bad as it gets i was selling my car and got offered one for a swap 96 range rover 4.0l petrol with lpg conversion nice wheels etc etc ertc i know nothing bout engines had a shot drove ok swapped last night!!drove back from the borders to other side of edinburgh and this morning thing cutting out wont drive and so on!!
tried both fuels, done some investigating a water hose going in to the head was lose no water smoking from engine filled up checked oil cap filled with white sludge.
phoned the guy wont answer his phone and is 400 miles away sent me a text after leaving him message saying swap is done tough luck.
is this deff the head gasket is gone??
i dont really have money to fix it im assuming it would be expensive:(
ALL AND ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED!!

If there is white gunge, then yes, it's most likely head gasket. Parts to do it yourself is cheap, but it's not a quick and easy job if you're going to do it yourself. Best bet is to find an independent landy dealer and get a quote if you dont want to do it yourself.

If you like, some of the boys could give him a nice "friendly" visit. :) I'm in Scotland end of July :)

firstly, if the logbook hasnt been sent off yet, i.e he has just given to you and filled it in i would go through a few speed cameras and change the date of the swap to after the speeding offence!!!!

i would also order a few kebabs and taxi's to his house too!!!

secondly i dont think you have any legal recourse, so you will end up putting it down to experience. if the water has gone into the oil rather than through the engine then this is good!! you need to get the heads off asap and investigate!!!

i suspect the swap value car was around the 2k mark so you would prolly get most of your money back if you broke the car.

personally i would fix it up get it polished up and sell it on if your not happy with it. it will grow on you tho!!!

when i dip it the oil looks ok though? only when remove oil cap its all white crap im prepared to strip the engine down as far as needs doing im no mechanic but ill give it a bash so in theory all i will need is new head gasket and get them heads skimmed yes? then fit back up??
INFO ON DOING THIS WOULD BE GREAT ALSO GUYS!

you will need a set for the gaskets, top end kit!!!

if you just slowly strip it out, its not hard at all ive done mine umpteen times!!! you can get h/gaskets on start to finnish in around 6 hours!!! obviously not if your skimming heads!!!

is it better to skim the heads? if im gonna do it i only want to do it once! and is there any helpful tips and guides etc out there?
oh thanks for the help so far guys i appreciate it

i'll get on to the parts list but for now have a look through the search on this forum. my old thread engine out contains loads of info from me and the fellas on her, should provide you with a laugh!!!

and would doing this deff solve the problem? is the only way to tell if its deff this to strip it right down? etc im only going to do this as i dont have the funds to give it to a garage or i would!

dont worry about lpg side just yet!!! get the petrol side running and the lpg should be easy to set up. you need the eka code for the car too, search it there are loads of posts!!!

Download the RAVE software. I don't have the link but maybe one of the others might have it.
Under the RR classic section there is an engine overhaul section for the 3.5/3.9/4.2 engines. Now its not exactly the same as the 4.0, (different fuel system, aint that right Gav:) ) but all the relevant sections are similar.
Good luck and let us know how you get on!

i really appreciate the help you guys thanks alot so you reckon just strat stripping it down in morning and when i reach the head gasket i should be able to tell soon as i see it if its knacked yeah?
whats the eka code?? i got a code from the guy on a bit paper you do with the key in lock so many each way back and forward etc is that it??

Surely you have the RAVE manual Gav!
Check out the RRC section, there are overhaul manuals for the V8 and gearbox which go into great detail that are not in the P38 section.

im gonna do a compression test in morning first before i strip it guys all help and advive is more than appreciated and i will post my findings on tomorrow so i can get more help ill take some pictures as well if you tell me how to post them?
thanks grant
