I recently bought a v8 disco 2 which I knew at the outset had various issues, but its a v8!
I can see from doing various searched that the main issue for these engines is engine temp, getting too hot causes dropped liners etc, and I wanted to know the best way of getting the coolant system setup to prolong its life.
So what would be the best thermostat to fit, want to fit an aftermarket temp gauge (not sure which one yet), is there any other recommendations you have that I should setup?

If you want to test the radiator for blockages, take it off, lie it flat and full with boiling water straight from the kettle.
It will get too hot to touch very quickly, but any areas that linger cooler than others indicate a blocked section

Here are the thermostat options:
  • PEM100990 - Cream is 190°F/88°C with Hard Spring (Designed for V8)
  • PEM100990B / PEM101020 - Black or Cream is 180°F/82°C with Hard Spring (Designed for a V8 and used as a stopgap for Freelander engines)
  • PEL500110 - Gray is 180°F/82°C with Light/Soft Spring (TD5 & Freelander engines)
  • AJ813558 - metal thermostat housing Jaguar 3.0L V6
The gray PEL500110 is the one I have installed on my V8 and monitor temps with an UltraGauge Blue OBD adapter and iPad.

With the correct radiator, viscous coupling + fan and water pump functioning with the correct amount of coolant there shouldn’t been any issues with over heating.
The only coolant issue with my 24+ old 3.9 has been a failed water pump bearing and viscous coupling bearing which was found when changing the pump so a replacement coupling was fitted, also using OAT antifreeze replaced every 5 years.

On YouTube there is a channel called Chris Fix. He has a good procedure for thoroughly cleaning out your cooling system. On my 99 P38 I purchased from Amazon an adapter that you install in the upper hose (preferably) which has a port for a sensor. I use an Autometer gauge with the sensor in the adapter. Much more sensitive than the dash Guage.

One thing that helps as well as fitting an oil cooler. Mine has one, and worked quite well, even at 45 degrees ambient and some heavy work she never overheated. Well, the engine, the carbs are a different story.
