Thinking of upgrading the rear diff on the disco, just for green laning and didn't want to go down the air locker route and saw these lsd's and was just wondering if any body had used one of them and what they though

Thanks

This is what is left of my Detroit Autolocker, they are good bits of kit but be aware the full lockers can be a bit of a handful if you are gonna stick grippy rubber on.

I would be tempted to go down the Kam route at the moment as the Detroit disintegrating has left a bit of a sour taste in the mouth for me but that is just my personal choice,

Just read up on the ashcroft atb's they sound brill :)

Defender2 - View topic - ATB (torsen) front and rear install

The downside of an ATB type diff is that to balance any torque both wheels on that axle have to have at least some grip. If you lift a wheel you will be back to an open diff scenario.

You can get over this by applying some braking force to the spinning wheel though. Effectively "tricking" the diff into seeing grip on that side.

I have the aid of traction control for those cross axle situations :)

I have a Detroit locker in the rear and trutrac in the front, very happy with both and it will go 99.9% of the places my mates 90 will with front and rear arb's

A trutrac is a worm gear type torque biasing diff the same as ashcroft I think, there is also plate type lsd around but not used one in a Landy.

TBH I'm not surprised that diff went south. If you watch a video of how they work it seems to be a very crude method of operation to me.

Exploded View - Inside the Eaton NoSpin Differential - YouTube

Surely every time there is a wheel speed differential the clutch assembly on the fast wheel side will "click" round the teeth on the central spider assembly (backed up by THIS vid).

After a while this is bound to wear the teeth and result in the diff being unable to "unlock" that side. Once that happens It'll load itself up and go pop.

Yes but I belive the trutrac has 3 helicoils where as the Ashcroft has 6?? Or something like that. So should be stronger so greater mating area should have less stress on them?

Those atb's look like something I could be very interested in.
Just what I'm after better than an open diff without being a full locked one.
How easy are they to fit do you think?
Now while I'm quite happy to swap an engine, gearbox etc I've never worked on a diff before and they look very complex. Is it a diy fit or a job best left to the pro's?
And just how much would you expect to pay?

I think mechanically they are quite easy to fit. Just gets abit complicated when it comes down to setting the preloads n stuff like that. That's what put me off fitting them.

But then again someone who actually knows might say that's a piece of **** to do when you know how and with the right tools

Whats your rough location, put it in your user setting so we can see.

There are a few places that will do a drive in drive out service or at least set the pre load and build them into a diff for you if your not confident to do it yourself.
