Coming back from South Wales late last night after visiting the Parents, got to junction 18 M4 The Battery light came on the Dash. Steering went very stiff, a minute later Alternater Failier came up in writing.
Pulled into the hard shoulder....Both my tensioner belt and i think fan belt snapped to pieces.
Had the kids and wife with me RAC were spot on and sent a Private Contractor recovery truck to take Range Rover and me to Bath where their Depot is... Dont worry i did'ent leave the wife and kids freezing in the rain, i called my old man to come and collect them and take them back to Wales before i left.. (Nice one Dad)..
They sorted me out a courtesy car, So back off to Wales i went to have a kip, (5am by this time).
We just arrived back in London today.
Can anyone give me an Idea as too how much i am looking at to get this sorted, if it is indeed just the belts and no other Damage.
The people in Bath said they could fix this for me and then deliver the RR back to me in London by Wednesday and take their car back with them.

The guy who would be doing the work apparently has a Landrover and knows all about the mechanical side of these motors.
He wont be around untill Tuesday, Hense the bank holiday, so i did'ent get a price there and then.

Cheers ....

You could do this yourself. in about half an hour.

Buy the belts from Halfords a couple of spanners and your done.

The steering went stiff because the belt was no longer driving the pump.

Dont pay anybody.

Normally the AA or RAC would go and get the belts and change them while you wait, was this not offered?

In the worst case and the alternator has seized, you can still change this yourself in under a half hour.

Check that both the alternator and power steering pump both still turn.

Fan belt and they didn't do it one the road side, thats strange. They did mine on my disco a few years ago on a camp site for the price of the belt.

Thanks for the advice...The RAC dide'nt come out to the car on the motorway...It was a private contractor who came as the RAC were too busy. They were sent by the RAC.
Getting the RR back tommorow un-fixed as i dont want a huge bill!!

Apparently i have been told that the Alternater belt has gone, the main cooling fanbelt has gone, the Fan itself is loose, and a tension pully under the fan has gone.

Is this still an easy job fo a Novice??

All very simple to do.

When they state that the pulley has gone, do they mean broken, seized or the bearings have worn.

If you have to change the tensioner, it is only one clamp bolt.
