I am happy with my 200TDI and the power...
However, I have just realised that I have never driven another Landy so have nothing to compare it with... the engine has 150K 1993 200TDI
pulls well to 10-15mph in 1st, 30 in 2nd, 40-45 in 3rd, 60mph in 4th and cruises in 5th on a motorway, however I have not gone above about 65mph on the flat. It takes about 20 secs to 55mph
Does this sound about right?
cheers

I've got a 93 200tdi, will cruise at 70 on motorway but 65 for better fuel consumption. I didnt buy a defender for speed though!60 in 4th sounds a bit much, normally change into 5th at about 50.

i was thinking the very same... mines a 2000 td5 pulls really well to about 60mph then i get a bit scared at 65mph... sounds like it needs another gear at around 65 so i stick to 60 when i come across one of them twin lane road thingys... dont get many in deepest derbyshire.... :D:D:D:D:D

Lets face it, you dont buy a 200Tdi for speed, its a "reliable" (or so im told) diesel with acceptable power I guess and is suitable for many of the uses in which a Defender is required. In comparison with other Diesels such as a 300Tdi I guess they are probably fairly similar as they have the same power although the 300 does feel like it pulls better, well ones iv driven do.

Mine was a 200Tdi before I lobbed the 3.9V8 in and in comparison the 200Tdi was really really slow. It now flies in comparison but thats pretty obvious.

Just after I got my old engine chipped with a StgII tune by Gary at TD5Alive and the turbo turned up to 1.4 bar on the way back from Grimsby I had the sat nav reading 101mph. The standard speedo had given up doing anything sensible. Trouble is Defender steering, suspension, and brakes were not built for that kind of speed. Never done it since but it pulled all the way to the red line in 5th. That engine is sadly no more. Nowt to do with ragging it I should add. My new TD5 engine will sit at 70mph all day long but its better on fuel consumption and the ears at 60mph which is were I tend to keep it. A Disco transfer box would give it slightly longer legs but I like the lower Defender gearing as I tow often.

I was thinking of getting something like that done, but i'll think i'll pass now! dont want her blowing up on me... doesnt it improve fuel eco as well or am i thinking of something else...:confused::confused::confused:

Fuel economy was better after the remap as the engine had more torque and was easier to drive. My old engine blew up because the oil pump sprocket came loose at 60mph and oil pressure went to zero. The engine was also suffering the effects of diesel in the engine oil. I knew it had a problem but it lasted three years until it went bang as I could not afford to fix it. Even so when I stripped it down the bottom end was still as good as new and is now powering a TD5 Landy in Tanzania. The oil pump is also still working just fine just outside Sun City SA.

In my td I change into 5th at about 45 ish, then itl go an extra 5mph and Sondheim like it's screaming! Like a seweing machine at 70! I never do 70 just wanted to see if it'd get there! I do 50 and I recon it's doing about 3.5thou rpm? Do your tdi's not sound the same up ther? Same gearing isn't it?

Fit bigger tyres  :p :D :D :D

my defender 200 tdi does just over 70 flat out, just fitted a disco transfer box, its much better for motorway cruising, but still only does about the same speed

I change up to 5th @ 40 then use all the torque from there and thats not using a wide throttle or laboring the motor .
She will do 70 but the trannys not brill in mine so i keep her at 50 - 60
( disco 200 , standard trans 19j - on 85 sahara's ) .

Ha ha oh yes your discription sounds just like mine Karlos:)... Normal roads 50mph can just hear the radio... 60 on the motorway... 70mph is a no no really, drinks diesel and f me its loud.... :D:D:D

Most of what everyone says is true, 60 is the speed a Landy works well at, 50 is better for motorways, and fuel is more economical. The 200Tdi will get there quicker and i find the speed/gear relation works perfectly, 1st to 10, 2nd to 20, 3rd to 30 and so on.

The transfer box will make a difference to cruising speed and give better mpg if it's off a Disco ( lower ratio? 1:2 instead of 1:4? )

Then again i could sit at 70 in my 19J and hit 85 at one point, couldn't hear fook all mind....
