Compared to what? Other Land Rovers? Which also happen to be in a completely different class when it comes to size, weight etc. I've looked at a Disco or a Defender. There was just no way I could afford one.
I could have bought a RAV4. That would have been the smart choice, I admit. Taking the fact I've registered here, guess why I didn't do that...

Buy the RAV4. I just didn't want to be seen in a boring Toyota. Even if it is unbreakable. I'd rather buy a car I like, than a car that's very reliable. A Land Rover then. So a Freelander it is...

What I don't need then is people telling me it's '****e'. I know that, I don't care...

OH I SEE. . . . .Well the doozles r good the new lr3 spose ta be the bollicks but we int had a lot of feed back on them yet ,the 1.8 un v6 have a lot of issue's , having said that a lot on here seem to get over them, the jatco auto boxes r good. . . . .vcu has been well documented. . . . . . . . bout it really:D :D :D oh . . . . . dont ever get the doors wet :);)

why dont you try (ab)using the FL as a farm hack and the defender to get to work. you might find the problem situation reversed:D
it's all personal preference and what the vehicle is to be used for.

The mark 1 Rav4 sadly isn't unbreakable. Mine ended up with syncromesh wear on second gear (well maintained car) which was getting worse by the day & talking to the Toyota parts guys it wasn't exactly unheard of. The gearbox also likes regular quality oil changes & a close eye on its levels or fifth gear is the first to complain then die.
Replacement means removal of the complete engine/gearbox on the early ones & the cheapest quote at the time for an unspecified mileage used box was £250. The good low mileage box was £450 all plus VAT & apparently it has to be hoisted out & can't be dropped out the bottom. I just got rid of mine at auction but was sad to see it go.
The mark 2 Rav4 which I was initially after was a lot more expensive than the Freelander which was my third choice & my then £5k budget wouldn't get a sensible mileage auto at that time.
My second choice of Shogun Pinin went to last choice when I went to look at a couple of low milers & was disappointed at how rusty they were.
 
For us it was either the RAV4, a CR-V or a Vitara otherwise. I was looking at a Defender or a Disco 2, but with the crazy tax rates in Holland that was simply out of reach. The Freelander costs me aprox 1050 pound a year on tax alone! I'm not ****ting you! A defender is aprox 1750 pound per year on road tax alone. A disco 2100 pound p/year. Add insurance, maintainance and fuel. See why those weren't an option...

The fact I went to Land Rover was based purely on the fact that I like them. All the other choices are probably better and more reliable. But boring as hell. The Freelander may fail a couple of times more, at least when I look at it every day, I like what I see.

Then someone comes along and calls it '****e'. Nice...

Me work had a rav4 (and a hilux...hack-phut) and the the gear box/clutch on that was shocking.Three point turns always lead to a nasty burning smell and a lot of grinding
 
We have two Freeanders and a Defender and the 90 costs more to maintain than both Freelanders put together. Not including routine servicing, the Td4 has cost £300 in repairs, the 90 has cost over five grand.

We love em both and would never abuse any one's choice of Land Rover.

seems to be a familiar story.

I once had a classic Rangie & whilst I loved it, it cost an absolute fortune to both run & repair.

You wouldn't have been out much in the recent bad weather then. Our neighbours A4 sat on their drive for two weeks 'coz it couldn't get out.
Like a lot of guys on here it bothers me when people who don't have experience of a Freelander ( I know you have so don't start) offer "advice" to others.

I thought I'd flog this dying horse one last time :5bbeatdeadhorse5: .Our friend Sean's wife wanted a land rover of her own,so without seeing it he bought one off ebay for a "few hundred"£.
He has spent alot of time and energy into fixing and rebuilding a KNACKERED old S III,I have know doubt that he knows his stuff about motors,I bet we could all learn alot from him,but I do think his wife would have bin much happier with this Landrover Freelander diesiel 1998 for sale in Kilkenny: €1,500 - DoneDeal.ie .
