just contacted my local dealer to get a price on a MOT and for the Hunter 4 x wheel alignment , just so i’ve got everything lined up for next month because replacing wishbones

MOT is £54.85 inc Vat

4 x wheel alignment , hold ur breath £360.00 inc Vat

Wow , am speechless with that price , as i’ve been contacting a few other garages that have the Hunter equipment , to be told they can’t do it, because there not able to put my suspension into tight tolerance mode

also contacted my local kwik fit garage as a comparison , but alas nope can’t do it

will email a company in surrey and see what there prices come out at

wondering what u guys have generally paid for wheel alignment please

thks as always and think i need to lay down after that price
 
The price for 4 wheel alignment maybe because they know what problems they may have if they have to attempt to loosen the cam bolts on the rear to adjust toe-in or camber.
I tried to loosen the LH rear camber control bolt on our L322 last week & had the end shear off. The remainder was locked solid inside the top hub bush. Fortunately, I had a new bush ready for replacement, but it took 2 hours to cut it out with a disc cutter !
I daren't try with the toe control arms until I've got all the replacement parts ready - as it looks much worse than the camber control bolts.
Until they've all been renewed & therefore are easy to adjust, I'm not getting a 4 wheel alignment chevk done - even though I can see rear tyre wear problems.
 
But there again if they are confident about being able to do it and the others cannot then maybe it's not as pricey as it appears?

that’s the thing , the rear upper wishbones and bolts will all be new , it’s the only thing that will change

have got a digital angle finder so can at least get the new wishbone back in its original place

got to get them out first , lol but know what u mean can be right pigs

had some other quotes , max price £120 or £35 min price , but is over in surrey

other places say they can’t do it due to not having the right equipment to put the suspension into tight tolerance

knew JLR might be abit more expensive but that’s a rip off

What you have to bear in mind is whilst it might be your pride and joy, in a main dealers eyes its an old dog ** which will cause a blot on their spotless premises and they probably priced it high so you will go away and if they do get the work they are quids in anyway.

More to the point who pays full price for an mot?

My local halfords autocentre do them for 29 quid I was sceptical, but used them twice and been no issues.

** I worked at a main truck dealer and anything over 3 years old was seen as punishment duty!

No need to be skeptical about MOT charges. The actual slots from vosa cost £2.05 and £54.85 is the maximum the garage are allowed to charge for the service. Never understood why people pay more than £30 for them.

It wasnt so much the cost more the potential rip off that I was kind of expecting, no such worries, maybe he saw my immaculate finger nails:D the tester looked suitably chunky and scruffy and not some 15 year old with a trendy beard, so I felt at ease and wandered off to get some glass.

I did smile when I came back and was waiting and heard the receptionist guy telling some girl her car had only just passed with the bare minimum of repairs that she had allowed them to do and was telling her the rest needed doing soon, I thought that wont see a garage until next year!

indeed ref my old bucket, lol

ref the alignment will try and get it back as close as possible

it says to mark the bolt camber position, however it will be a new upper wishbones and bolts so that won’t work

got a digital angle find which i thought if i put it onto the disco before removing the old ones i should be able to get the new ones back near as dam it back in the same place

seeing i won’t be touching the back alignment bar only the top wishbone and top knuckle bush , don’t know if it will work doing it that way with the angle finder ????

then get it through it’s MOT then for the alignment take it over to a garage in surrey, max charge £120 or free if no adjustment is req

thks ref the tight tolerance mode question, many garages said they can’t do it because of that , even though i said my iid will do that ,lol
