is there a difference between old 4.6 & new 4.6 engine ?

hi, everyone can anyone say if there is a difference between the old 4.6 engine and the new 4.6 engine. ie on flywheel for both and crankshaft pick up points . as just had the gearbox fully rebuilt after a previous bodge job , and have had to change flywheel as previous bodger had fitted a 4.0 ltr flywheel now the vehicle wont start due to pick up not lining up with teeth on flywheel
any help would be appreciated

Probably due to the CPS not being fitted correctly. Either too far in and it's damaged the teeth on the drive plate or too far out which means the sensor is not picking up the teeth.
Either way, diagnostics or a scope on the sensor leads will confirm whether it's sending a signal.
Check that the 18mm thick spacer is fitted on the sensor and if not, whether the sensor or the teeth on the drive plate are damaged.

can the sensor or spacer be changed without removing box again ? as gearbox place seems to think the box has to come back out again to change sensor or spacer

Dunno what sort of place you have took it to but they do not seem very clued up.
The CPS is held by a single bolt and is located in the bottom r.h. corner on the outside of the engine block...looking at the car from the front (Passenger side of the engine).
The spacer slides over the sensor body before fitting to stand the sensor face away from the teeth on the drive plate (Flywheel).

The Gearbox does not have to be touched at all.

hi again, just to reiterate, the vehicle is a 2001 4.6 vogue,which had previously had a bodge job done on gearbox. ie someone has managed to fit a 4.0 ltr autobox and flywheel etc to get vehicle to drive long enough for some unsuspecting buyer to purchase the said vehicle, anyhows it lost drive, and i purchased a supposedly known good second hand 4.6 autobox and had it fitted at a local garage, however when it was fitted and finished there was still no drive, by this time im down nearly £800 and two wks have went by so i decided to take it to a proper auto transmission place , to have box removed rebuilt and refitted,and now this has been done. but it has since came to light that the flywheel fitted to car is in fact a 4.0 one and not a 4.6 one which does not give the correct clearance needed for the torque converter. so i have purchased a second hand 4.6 flywheel they have removed box again. and fitted replacement, but im left with the problem of the cps not lining up with the teeth on the flywheel , hence why im wanting to know if there is any difference between an early 4.6 engine/flywheel and a later 4.6 engine and flywheel, as this has been going on for 5 wks now and im at a loss what to do next

yes you need the complete 4.6 set up,starter ring flexi plate etc i too once owned one like this they had put a 4.6 autobox in a 4.0 with all the 4.6 gubbings and had spaced out the cps with a old rusty nut and bits of metal to make it work which it did but cps used to move now and again stopping it from running
