I am in the process of rebuilding my doors, installing new tops, hinges, handles, steel and paint. I just found the remains of an old CAMEL sticker under the paint. Can anyone tell me if that is important??? I am attempting to restore the Wagon back to original.
I purchased it in Sicily, no title, no vehicle history mileage un-known

You are correct it is a desert sand color. Sicily is only about 120k from Africa could it have been used like you said... as a Safari vehicle? i guess what I mean to ask is....
-Is this sticker from the factory and does it indicate certain options like a safari or desert package. (hence the safari top and stock overdrive)
-Or is it something someone just thought looked cool and stuck it on the door? i'll get a few pics loaded up shortly

sorry if I'm an idiot, but i had only seen series landy's in old war movies until I came across the pond.

I seem to recall a Camel Trophy Land Rover, it had LWB, roofrack, waterbottles etc etc. Paris to Dakar sort of event possibly. Maybe a google search will throw it up? Photos would be nice.

i just looked it up in 1983 they used a Series III for the Camel Trophy in Africa
color sand..check
1982 series III 88...check
Waterbottles ...check
8 blade fan...check
Italy entered a team... Im in italy
Now how do i know if it is authentic?? I'm scared to touch it now, I don't want to mess it up any.

Sounds like quite a find...is it a lefty ?

Yes it sure is a lefty it has german gauges too. do you know of any one i could contact to see if it is the real deal? I watched a Youtube video of the 1983 Camel Trophy they look just like mine!

I'm not sure who would have the records on these but you could try writing into LRO magazine etc and someone might help. Photo's would be brilliant. Good luck.:)

Landrover organised the Camel trophy for many years - all vehicles were sand from memory, and competitor vehicles plus support vehicles were liveried, though I doubt that many of the latter carried all the Trophy equipment and had all the mods. The G4 challenge is the current alternative. During the life of the trophy LR focused on different models so there are genuine Camel Land Rovers across most of the model range upt the end of the competition, but only one model competed each year (i.e all Discoveries or whatever). LR supplied the vehicles and the teams were competitively chosen on selction days.
The issue is - do you have a genuine Camel LR or one that has been tricked up with aftermarket accessories to look vaguely similar. If it is genuine then it is potentially rare and any changes you make will potentially detract from its value.
There should be loads of general background on the Camel trophy on the internet. As to identifying your vehicle why not try LandRover first - and remember to ask them about support as well as competitor vehicles.
I have a vague recollection that there is actually a separate club for Camel vehicles which covers all the LR models which competed - worth searching for.
Hope that helps
