Is my 200tdi really a 2.5N/A?

Enough is enough!!!!!!

1984 90 with a disco 200tdi engine, defender lt77 gb and the disco transfer box.

Now I know Land Rovers aren't built for speed but it'd be nice to know why I bothered doing the conversion.

I am getting a top speed of 60mph...max 65 on a very long straight on a good day. Normal cruising speed 50mph.

Average fuel consumption is 25mpg..I only do straight 40 mile runs at 50mph so expect better.

Now I vaguely remember 6 months ago when the conversion was done that it would sit at 65mph and once, just to see what she had, I did 80mph.

I have a new lift pump ready to go on but after fitting a new battery my starting issues were cured, starts 1st time every time even in minus 20 degrees.

There is NO distinct turbo whistle..if I really strain my ears over the engine noise, I reckon I can faintly hear a whistle in 2nd and 4th just as its reaching max revs in those gears. In 5th there is no torque, I often avoid using 5th as it sits better in 4th at 55mph.

Now, I can take it down to a local garage, the only one with any experience of land rover turbos, for a pressure test and general look over. However at £80 an hour plus vat I want to be sure he doesn't rip me off.

So to the questions.

How long roughly should it take to test a turbo at the garage?

Could it all just be down to a crap lift pump?

Any other thoughts?

Thanks in advance....I'ts really getting on my tits now..it sounds and performs just like the N/A I replaced.

test your boost pressure yourself it's quite easy
instructions to do it are in the Haynes manual.
you just need a length of hose, a Tee piece, and a boost gauge.

OK..but as its dog cold outside and i sleep in the day....and i want to get this sorted...can you lot easily hear your turbo whistle when you tootle along?

can't really hear mine now since ah changed the hoses. Used to before with the old split sqidgy ones...

Yours looks a lot tidier than nine Buster, it was a tight fit with some of the pipework and I think some of them are restricting airflow...especially from the airfilter, i haven't got any pix at the mo...i'll see if i can get up tomorrow while its light.

That's cos his is a 'fender Tdi, not a disco one - thing being that the turbo is higher up on the 'fender one. :)

That's because mines ain't a disco engine mate:p ;):D

strange...

mine has a 200 disco engine in it and have loads of torque in 5th... i can actually go uphill in 5th, press it down it will move..
