I hear late series 2a has lights in wings like mine, I have new sills for it even though I think it looks ok without them but need to get them painted before I fit them, She does have full syncro box and a Fairy overdrive.

She is 1969 but may be older as this is my original question to see if anyone might know why it says on docs date of manufacture unknown but first registered in 1969

Later 2a's do have headlights in the wings but not the blower intake.

No idea why DofM is unknown? MOD are usually pretty good at keeping records.
 
If it's a 1969 or older then that is before the changeover year so lights should be in the grille and standard gearbox would not be full synchro.

Don't know about that bit on the V5.
 
Ah well, maybe it is not mod, is there anywhere that I can get the build data so I can find out for definate if she is supposed to have central headlights or not, also I want to know should she have safari rear door or dropdown type rear door.
 
if it was ex mod the first registered date will be later than the manufactured date as it gets its road registration when it is demobbed.

my s1 was built at the end of 1954, it did its national service with the 1st vehicle group roac and was demobbed in 1963 and given a registration for that year, so showed as first registered 1963, one of the po's got it changed to an age related plate so it says first registered 1954.

I received the V5 back for my Series 2a this week and had her in for mot today, in Special notes section 3. it says
1. WAS REGISTERED AND/OR USED. MANUFACTURED DATE UNKNOWN, the date of first registration was 18-07-1969, mot chap said that it looks like it might be ex MOD.

Is there a way I can find out?
I suggest the first step is to spend £5 with DVLA via the V888 form, justifying the request by saying you want the information for personal research. This will (should) give you all the owner history the DVLA can find. This may be of interest whatever it tells you.
If it's ex-military the oldest photocopy may show the Procurement Executive as the owner. There might be a manuscript note giving the military registration number.

The next step is to give the chassis number to the Series 2 Club forum and ask if someone can look it it up when they go to Gaydon. The result will give you the date of manufacture.
If you want the information more quickly and with more authority you buy a dating letter from Gaydon.
Once you have such a letter you can use it to ask DVLA to put the correct information on record. They won't accept a private record, that comes from a personal visit to Gaydon, whether by you or anyone else.

Stick your VIN in here and see what it comes up with, this will tell you the model.

Or have a look on page 3 of the LR manual, it gives a list of what vehicle each VIN was.

As for what body shape/doors etc I'm not sure but interested in the answer :)
 
Thats great info guys, I would like to get to the bottom of the mysteriousness of the DVLA not knowing the year of manufacture ???
 
Right I put my Chassis number into the Vin Tool, I do have a Series 2a, Basic or Station Wagon, 88", PETROL!!! (which I am happy about as I have a 2 1/4 Petrol from my series 2 to go into her), Model year is 1962-1971, Destination:-Home Market.

The bit I dont understand is under Design it says:- Six significant design modifications

I suppose this has clarified that she is definately a Series 2a
 
So at some point someone threw a whole bunch of SIII things onto it... An attempt at keeping it on the road I guess?
 
Looks like it, I would like to find out what the six significant modifications were.

So if I put my series 2 front end on it and take out the dash and fit the series 2 clocks she would be back to normal
 
Third post states that it has a replacement chassis! I am not surprised that the dvla is unable to give a manufacture date, everything that would have identified it as a tax free 2a is series3. Is there 1 thing that's 2a?? Should be on a Q.
 
Anything before 73 is Tax Exempt! So you saying all Series 3's Pay Tax?

I had a look on that link CalumM posted and found this, this describes my 2a down to a "T"
Late Series IIA Land Rover(1968/9-1971): Headlamps are on the wings, but the radiator panel is covered by a metal galvanized grill (after 1969). The later IIA had a single, single speed, windshield motor (after 1967). The instrument panel is painted black, and not body co lour as on earlier vehicles. The sill panels are narrower, being approximately two inches tall, unlike the much wider panels on the earlier IIA's. (1969-71 door latches changed, changed again for III). Mirrors on the top door hinge.

But I guess the Jealous ones will say that is wrong :)
 
The passenger wing has been swaped for a series 3 one (can tell by the heater intake),

Is your instrument panel a metal one in the middle then or a plastic one in front of the driver?

If in the middle, its a definite 2A
 
I see what you mean now, my pal at work just found a pic of a 2a with lights in the wings and the passenger wing doesn't have the heater, the wings are identicle otherwise, not the bug eye type.

My bulkhead is series 3 yes so what happens next, I was thinking to buy a series 2 galvenised bulkhead but hey, that two is not the one it left the factory with, should it still be on a Q?

Hope you guys understand that this 2a is my pride and joy and I am going to do my damdest to find out how it left Solihull so I can try and get her as close to that day as possible.

I know she is on a galvenised chassis and the parts will not be the original ones but you know at the end of the day this is 45yo vehicle, I have had loads of cars in the past that I have made them look newer, I had mk4 Cortinas in the 80's of which I changed lights, wings and interiors for mk5 crusader parts, the way I see it a previous owner has done the same with my 2a.

And I thought this club was for non rivet counters :)
 
Theres very little of mine thats original now :D Bits of the body and the axles are all thats coming to mind and possibly the air cleaner and grill but thats it and I dont care at all, its your car, use it how it makes you happy :)
