Is a V8 on LPG really as 'economical' as a diesel?

Think your 200tdi is as quick as a v8? Don't be silly!!

The V8 originally fitted to 90/110 vehicles, the 3.5, either had 113bhp up to 1986, and 135bhp in the later ones, compared to a Tdi at about 107bhp, there's not a lot of difference.

Unless they've been rebuilt, most of these old V8s are pretty tired now, and seem to lose their performance worse than Tdis do with age and milage, there wouldn't be much in it in a drag race, especially if the Tdi had had the injection pump tweaked (at zero cost).

The only reason I would be tempted towards a V8 would simply just be the fact that it's a V8 - the sound and feel - smiles per gallon as WLM puts it. Saying that, a Tdi can be made to sound pretty awesome with some fettling to the exhaust etc.

I do miss my 3.9 from time to time, and if my Landy was purely a toy then I would probably go back to a V8, but as it stands the Tdi does all I want and more - and costs me less to run than my brother's ****ty euro hatch. :p

agreed.

haveing used both i find the tdi quicker mostly than the V8.especially off road.
much more torque.it doesnt have the sound but it pulls and dont overheat.

Do agree on the overheating but haven't tried the 3.5 as I have the 3.9 in a 90 and got it shifts!! My mates have the 200 & 300 and I leave them for dust and the 300 is not standard!!

Mine is realiable and good off-road and never been stuck and run road based tyres it has the power to pull through but Is not cheap to run at all but it is our third car (toy) so I put up with it.

Ok u know best!! 120bhp - 182 bhp same weight your maths is good.

My 300tdi puts out an steady 150hp, try putting a RV8 with a stated 182hp on the rollers...you'd be lucky to see 100hp lol.
Don't get me wrong I like the old RV8, had a few, they sound lovely but they ain't a patch on the 200tdi and 300tdi.

And a V8 with a few simple mods would **** all over a tdi ;)

Yes offcourse it would. especially a modified 4.6...:D
But fook me they like a drink...
I do love the sound of the RV8 and they are very light units if petrol was back down to 40 - 50 p a litre I would have one again, as my Landy is a daily driver a derv is the only option for me.

RV8 are not very good at tolerating lpg
