Is a 1998 2.0d worth £200?

Ok, looking for pointers here really and anything to look out for.

As a bit of a defender addict Ive never had anything to do with freelander, but Ive been offered a 3 door that has been off the road for 4 years. It has been kept in a garage, appears in good nick, but was taken off the road following a "knocking" at the rear end.

Its one of the early ones with the ribbed body kit, has very nice chrome bullbar and side steps, spot lights, guards and towbar. It starts first time, drives and has done 80k. The tyres are shot but it appears in tidy condition, but havent had chance to look under it so not sure of any rot, brake condition etc.

So over to you guys, is it worth a punt for £200?

Oh, I also forgot it has a half decent private reg on it but the guy says it will have to go with it due to the hassles of getting on the road before he could get it off.

Let us know the worst:confused:
 
Probably worth £200 to scrap it, and break it for parts!.

Mind you could always remove the rear prop and diff and use it as a FW drive runabout, to save the expense of replacing the IRD and VCU.

Yeh, I guess its a good price if I can get it on the road, as I will need to do this to get the plate off it.

Was hoping for pointers also as to watch out for. It appears Mark here has possibly explained what the knocking was initially, is that what happens when the "IRD and VCU" goes?

Cheers for the comments so far, but do they rot at all at that age(I am a defender owner, hence caution! Lol!), and if it needs say new calipers etc, are they expensive?
 
Depends on the knocking it could be a lot of things, rear centre diff mount, diff, ird/vcu, wheel bearing, driveshaft, prop centre bearings etc
Have a good prod and poke at it/round then get back on here with your findings.

They don't rot (it's not a disco) new calipers can be expensive but rarely cause probs

My 1998 has no rot, I am impressed at is condition underneath considering its age. Things like calipers can be picked up s/h for a not a lot of cash.
 
My old 1999 2.0DL was rear ended last February - it had dine 102,000 mles was clean and tidy but prop removed as VCU had gone and need Ed a bit of TLC - the insurance gave me £2700 for it and you can buy one for £200 - it must be stolen! I bet the plate is worth much more than that.
 
At a guess the plate could be worth £3-400, but will need to see it again to check its value as I didnt write it down! Lol!

The lad who has it has done plenty of work for me and is straight up, but doesnt have much mechanical clue, so parked it when it got noisey.

It was parked in his mother in laws garage, but he has split with his wife, so it needs "moving" now!:rolleyes:

Just been on the phone with him a few minutes ago and all is planned to collect it at the weekend.

Cheers for the help guys, but if you think of anything else I might need to know, please add on. I have a feeling I will be along again later asking for guidance after Ive got under it!:eek:

i would have bought it just for the parts. wouldnt mind the ribbed body kit if your thinking of stripping it. what colour is it? plus if you do make it into a modo theres a couple of guys on here who could def use the prop.
 
Bought a 1.8 Es last month for £280 did come with a blown engine though.
