I'm swapping parts off my old L series engine to a new one when I discovered that the water pipe outlet from the block which connects to the IRD cooler, contains a tiny thermostat. I checked it with hot water and it works! I bet not many people know about this!
The old engine is Fubar, anyone want a boat anchor?

Never seen one. Got any pictures?

I thought the IRD coolant plumbing was combined with the cabin heater matrix... By the bulkhead there is pipework that splits flow into the heater and IRD. Are you sure that what you saw isn't a valve that restricts flow going through the heater matrix if the heater is not in use?

I know my Disco had a similar valve to restrict heater coolant flow and always assumed there'd be something similar on the Freelander.

I agree the whole plumbing system is connected but this valve is part of the fitting that screws into the block and has a pipe connection directly to the IRD. The valve in it blocks the flow until it heats up. I know this because I couldn't blow down it until I had heated it up with a kettle. Therefore it would seem that water doesn't flow until the engine reaches a certain temperature. I'm not sure of the direction of flow and I'm sorry that I had refitted it all before taking pictures. The reason I noticed it was because the fitting in the new engine had a different bore and no thermostat so I swapped my old fitting into the new engine which is probably from a rover car. I then noticed that the sump needed changing as well! I hope that there are no other differences!!
