Hi All,

A new problem started today...:(

With ignition in position 2, when I then go to start, sometimes I get absolutely nothing (no noises at all) and sometimes she starts fine?

I have been having issues with what I think is a worn ignition barrel for a while, in that it occasionally takes a while for the key to actually turn in the barrel.

I suspect the issues aren't linked, but any help would be appreciated to find the problem.

Cheers, Oscar22.

Have I hit on something that nobody knows about?! Surely not.

By the way, all lights seem normal whether it does start or it doesn't.

Cheers.

Assuming this is a disco2?

It could be the starter motor solenoid if there is a quiet click (This is quite common). Repair kit cheaply available on ebay.

Alternatively, as you hint at, it could be a worn ignition switch contactor?

Same on mine a little while ago

If you are getting:-
all the light on on the dash
No alarm light
No clicking from solenoid

It was the wire to the solenoid that had come loose, sometimes it would start other would do nothing

Yes, a 2003 Disco 2.

All lights on, and no alarm light (so not immobiliser).

Nor any 'click' that I can hear.

So, sounds like the solenoid/solenoid contact. Where can I find this little beauty?

Cheers all.

Don't forget that there are a number of things that have to line up and work before the ignition start circuit is made.

Fuse box in the passenger compartment Fuse 23 and the BCU has control of that circuit as well.

Have a look at the multi-plugs on the back of the passenger compartment fuse board.

The solenoid is part of the starter motor assembly. An overhaul kit consisting of a new plunger and copper contacts is available usually via ebay etc. The symptom of the solenoid misbehaving is usually a click on turning key but if you look at the starter motor there is a thinish wire connecting to a spare terminal, from memory. This wire is the one which activates the solenoid so put a multimeter on it, turn key and see what happens. I cannot recall whether the wire is grounded or pulled high when you turn the key but something should happen!

I ended up with a new starter motor recently - the original motor shaft was worn, so just fitting an overhaul kit would have meant probably revisiting the starter motor in the very near future. oh well... £170 all in and it's guaranteed.

I too was greeted with nothing apart from a click, so I hit the solenoid area a few times and hey presto, she fired up....... but with an extra whirring noise! Turned the key off and the start is merrily trying to start the engine all on its own; the thing had welded shut. Had to disconnect the battery to stop it burning out.

Found it! Hope fully it will be something more simple but I doubt it!

Cheers, Oscar22.

I've been suffering the exact same thing. Today though it won't start at all! All lights go out but nothing, not even a click. If it is the solenoid thing where do I find it? Any pics would be good:eek::confused:
