intermitant starting problem HELP

can anyone help out on this one please , I have a 97 300tdi auto she starts most of the time ok but goes through a stage when she wont ,put key in weight for glow plugs turn key n click .
the only way I can start her is if I turn engine over by hand (about 3"of movement) try again n she starts .
ive fitted a new ignition /new battery 780CCA/ new starter/ its as if there is to much compression for the starter to turn I was told it could be the kickdown cable or inter lock solenoid ,she starts in P n N but no other gear so I don't think it these ,has any one had this problem or shead some light on it .

My old RRC had an intermittent starting problem. Usually it would, occasionally it wouldn't. Traced it to a fault in the wires between the starter and the switch.
Fixed it by running a live from the battery, through a push-button on the dash, to the LT terminal on the starter.

Never owned an auto, but driven a couple. I thought they were designed not to start in any gear except park and neutral!

Ive had this problem with truck more than a few times when the battery's are flat
going buy what you describe

The starter is only getting enough power to throw its self in then gets stuck in against the throw of the engine (compression)
Like you we have to turn the engine buy hand to let the starter return back

I would be looking for a poor connection esp earth strap
Allso as said above a week signal wire connection

Thats my wild stab in the dark anyway

Mine's a 97 300 tdi,a few days ago mine started playing up.When the heater light went out.the engine managment light flashed and it just clicked when trying to start it.It didn't do it all the time,i topped the power steering fluid up and its not done it since.But i am not sure if it was that,touch wood it seems ok now.
