Hi, Can anyone help me Please ?? I am trying to insure my son who is 17 (and my husband) for a 1990 defender - most insurance companies wont consider insuring the landy as it is a 4x4 or because of my sons age. Can anyone reccomend any companies to try?? I tried aviva, as suggested by someone on this forum, but they quoted me £13K!! ( I couldnt find the way to change the description of the car to a light utlity rather than an estate) Any hints tips advice would be much apreciated. Thanks : )

Hi, Thanks for getting back to me ... I called them and they said that they didnt want to waste my time on the phone as the quote would be astrinomical!! Any other suggestion please?? Thanks.:)

I got mine when I was 19 through Adrian Flux. Think it was something like £500. If you google it, they'll come up as specialist car insurance and a pegasus logo. I'm still with them now as I've never had a better quote.

God Almighty woman - that's hideous! You're not from some deep south trailer park are you? :p

:D

On the insurance front, that's a tough one. I think you need to be a bit careful here. You may eventually happen upon some vague insurance outfit apparently willing to insure your boy for a comparatively reasonable sum, but the quality of that policy in terms of what will happen if/when he or a third party makes a claim may well be another matter. ;)

I hate to say it, but at 17 he may be better served cutting his teeth on a 1 litre Polo for a year or two and building up some no-claims history with a 'reputable' insurer (and yes - I use this term very loosely).

Thanks - I've just got a quote from the co op £5,500 - better than £13,000 - but still more than the car is worth!!:(

Thanks for the advice .. it might just have to be my husbands toy rather than a car for my son to drive at this rate .. I just thought how cool it would be for him to have a Landy rather than a panda / polo which most of his friends have .. and the landy cant go fast!!

I defo see your point! You'd think they'd be viewed as super low-risk in speed terms, but I guess insurers look at young people in Fenders and just think 'ram-raider'. :D

Annandale Insurance Brokers. Got my freelander 2.0 TD4 at 21 with no NCB but 2 years as a named driver on my parents 2 defenders. Set me back £1750 but it was 1/4 of the cost with aviva through the brokers than going to aviva directly. Give it a try?
