Hi,

writing from Germany, please excuse my bad english...

I´ve bought an series III on ebay and on september the second I want to drive her home to germany. I know, it would be much easier, to go to Glasgow with a roadtrailer, but it would be more fun to drive her home on her own wheels...

My problem and my question:

How can I get an insurance for driving the car, it has MOT, but as I know in GB the driver only has an insurance and not the car?!

Hope you can help me, it`urgent!

Regards
Tobias

Tobias if you insured it through your own German insurance surely that would enable you to drive it whilst the vehicle is within the EEC? Or if not try looking at Sureterm insurance here in the UK, but normally you would have to reside in the UK. Oh almost forgot welcome to loonyzone

I am sure you can get the equivalent of our green card cover in Germany from your insurer and better request international recovery cover.

The trailer option may be the better way to go, driving an unfamiliar Series III purchased on Ebay down our motorways would not be high on my list of fun things to do.

Out of interest how much did you pay?.........must be special if your hauling it that far.:)

In Germany I only can get an insurance after the car got a german number after "Zulassung" permission by TÜV ( MOT I think).

When I want to drive a car without TÜV, I can buy a special number for five days, but this works only in germany, netherlands, belgium, but not in UK.

Maybe there is something simular in UK?

Regards
Tobias

no there is no special licence plate facility in the UK, has the previous owner still got insurance running on the series, because if so you may be able to drive it if you have an insurance policy running on any other vehicle that you may own

...ah, and here she is:

technically he does own the vehicle until the paperwork is recieved by our department for vehicle licencing authority to have the changes made to it.

Road tax runned out six weeks ago. Seller would renew if I want, but he told it is about 115 Pounds and about 60 Pounds when police stops me driving without...

This must be something others have come up against. I know a geezer in Koblenz who imports Landies into Germany (no, can't get hold of him, have tried, but he's usually quite elusive!)

Maybe call DVLA in Swansea or the British plod for guidance. They might be able to suggest something or at least clarify the law?

You could try and stick it back on Ebay..............untaxed vehicles are liable to be impounded and crushed in the UK if caught using them on the Queens Highway.

Looks like the trailer option.

could you not just bring your temporary German plates over with you and put them on I'm sure our local police would not know the difference.

Bet he'd git pulled, spesh on the Motorway @ 50! If the plates were only valid in Germany even if he got european insurance I doubt it would be valid as the plates wouldn't be valid outside of Germany. Calculated risk I guess.
