I am 17 and learning to drive, i would like to get a 90 as a first car but i am getting qoutes of 4 grand plus from go compare sites, can anyone recommend an insurance company that is worth giving a try, do any young drivers have any advice or tips?

All/all that I have tried, of the companies in the back of mags won't touch you if you are under 25 or some 21. I'm 20 now and will be switching to one of them next year hopefuly. Get your parents to ring admiral and set up a multicar policy. It's worked out 100 quid a month cheaper for them and about a grand cheaper for me. They seem to like younger drivers and have much lower prices.
 
join a legitimate car club and buy the cheapest nastiest car you can insure untill you get some ncb im 27 and can insure a classic landy for 110quid with 6 points on my ticket
 
I started off with a jeep wrangler and was paying £3000 a year at 17. Now I've got a defender too and have just insured that for £250. I'm now 21 but have no no claims cos I've always been on my parents policy till now. I was getting the same sorts of prices wherever i went then i tried lancaster, through moneysupermarket i think. Mine is a 1975, which seems to be why it's so low, that and I've restricted the mileage. So if you want a land rover at 17, buy old. Youll build up all the mechanical skills for later on and either fall in love and keep repairing it or run it into the ground and get a newer one when the insurance cost drops. I know everyone will say start with a little car and wait till you have some NCB, but it's nice to have something different from everyone else, plus youll only end up wrapping it round a tree in the end so better to have a landrover with a dented front than a scrapped mini and some broken bones.
 
If you plan to go off roading or green laning then I'd suggest forgetting the usual insurers. For the simple fact that they will not insure you to drive off road or go green laning. Roll it over while you're off roading? Hit into someone else while off roading? Insurance company won't pay out.. That's why it's better to get specialist 4x4 cover.

I suggest getting a quote with Adrian Flux. They will cover you for off roading and green laning providing you specify that you want 4x4 cover.

They were also the cheapest for me too.

Also, age is only one factor that insurance companies take into account. When I was 18, (6 years ago) it was cheaper for me to insure a BMW 316 than it was for me to insure a 1.1 Ford Fiesta of a similar age.
 
But it is quite a big factor with most. Adrian flux quoted 4500 for my defender, and I pay 900 with Admiral.. Fully comp. I'm guna try them again now tho to see if sumat was done wrong.

When they ask if you're a member of a club, say yes. They don't define what they mean by "club" and by dictionary definition, Landyzone.co.uk could be classed as a club.
 
I'm 18 with a fender. Got m insurance down to £900 With aviva. Try putting your parents on the insurance. It took nearly a grand off it... I was quite lucky to get that tbh. I was quoted £3800 for a £200 fiesta :p

That's a little ambiguous.

Hope you didn't mean "Get listed as a named driver and have your parents as a main driver"

Sorry I meant pt them as named drivers. Im pretty sure its fraud to do that. My insurance policy says that I have to use it 51% of the time. Though I'm not sure how they could ever tell.
 
I have always been insured with the NFU (i'm 20 now) and they have always been reasonable. Started on a series then a defender and having had an accident, had no problems with them paying up.

They are starting to get a bit ****y now as i want to fit a rollcage but are fine with the 300tdi conversion, 2 inch lift, larger tyres, soft top, disco axles etc.

Adrian Flux seem very helpful and understand modified land rovers a lot better than the NFU but due to my age refused to give me 3rd party cover on any vehicle, wheres for £100 more I can get it with NFU which is very helpful. When i got a quote from Adrian Flux, they offered me discounts for being a member of LZ and also for being involved with the Uni off road club

It is illegal to be the main driver and insured as a named driver. Jak1471 is correct, adding your parents as named drivers knocks the price down nicely.

i take it your dad or someone is also with them? they wont insure me till im 25 unless my dad or mum has a policy with them, then they will do it when im 20.
 
adrian flux are the best. I was 18 with a 200tdi 90 with no ncb and it was £750. Now 20 with a 3.9 efi defender heavily modded for £850 1 year ncb both my own policy. My advice join a 4x4 club and put your partner (if you have one) on the insurance shows your grown up :p
