Hi guys

looking at buying a set of insa turbo special tracks with a set of black moduler's for our 1988 defender 90 originally a 2.5 td but converted to tdi but not sure what size tyres to get, want to keep to 16" as reguards wheel size is concerned, the landy is fitted with std suspension and has wheel spaces fitted as its currently on land rover alloys.

want to use the 90 for offroading / green laning for long distance driving I will switch to the alloys with the tyres ( not checked what they are yet ) that are fitted to them, what would suggest

Unless your getting 285's don't bother, the dakars or mud terrain patterns in 265 or 235 will do the same. Special tracks are only worth it 285's or 35" etc.

Just Because you can get the same place on mud terrain pattern in 265 than 265 special tracks. I've ran 265 special tracks and found mud terrain or the Dakar just as good in 265, maybe better as you don't have to worry about snapping half shafts. If you try boot on special tracks somthing will break, mud terrains arnt as damaging. If ya go 285 you will get everywhere, and then you don't need to boot it like you would with the small 265/235 so you won't snap anything.

** saying that, took a trip to wales 2 weeks ago and he took a set of 285 special tracks up, within the first hour he blew a front diff, swapped that, blew back half shaft, quick change then popped the back diff. They really do break ya truck unless your running heavy duty everything.

I'd say get some insa Saharas or Dakars. Or special tracks but don't go flat out lol!

They will rub a lot without a lift kit. I'd stay with somthing 265 as that's kinda the ideal size, this way you still get articulation with the tyres rubbing, you could get 265 special tracks but just go steady unless your putting hd shafts etc.
Hope this helps, but it's your choice so don't let me put you off!! ;)

Cheers for all this advise but think we will go for special tracks in 265 form and just be carefull but mite consider H.D. half shafts aswell.

ok I know its a different animal but I have blown diffs with kingpin mud trackers on then later fitted kingpin hilander's ( diamond tread ) with no prob's but I do know what you mean ;):)

I run 265/75/16 special tracks,

A 285 is starting to get to wide and will float, a 265 special track will go further than a bf mud unless your sat on the axles, then they are both the same, if you want size 35, 10.5, 16 fedimas same pattern as st,

I've had bf MUDs, nexen MUDs (same pattern as bf) and special track all the same size, the special track diggs in, and yes anything that creates more traction will put more stress in the drive train,

Here's a few pics of mine from the weekend and a pic of the banking after,

This is mine after been recovered by a guy with special track on, it was hard compact but wet mud, proof they dig,

Nice pics, yeah its not like we will be offroading / green laning every weekend like some do just every now and then so hopfully everything should be ok, we will be fitting a winch aswell which should help save the drive train :)

how did you work that out ^^^^^I run 235/85/16s on specials and I get places people on 33s mud pattern dream of sometimes its not all about the size its more about the pattern big chunky lugs to chern there way though the mud I also use mine as a everyday motor apart from a bit on noise there ok on the road but it all depends what you want the car for ??? but I no one thing once you've had specials you wount go back !!!

Completely agree, and I also completely disagree with maxyman.
265 specials will go almost anywhere, ats, definitely will not.

Not on about all terrains lol saying mud pattern like the dakars. They will do the same as 265 specials but when you do have wheel Spin going you don't break shafts. Don't want mud pattern wide as it needs to be able to cut in like the side lugs on special tracks do. I'm not touching 285 specials just because I've seen them break so many bits,
I may go back to 265s specials when my dakars are worn down it will be interesting to see as I've found no difference between them

I agree about the 285s more prone to snapping shafts.
But I really don't think ther are many tyres that match the grip of specials.

Yes that is what I thaught fella but I've really not seen much differance. Dakars(mud terrain pattern) are spot on the same as special tracks until about half 3/4 worn where there useless. But I am thinking about going back to them next as they did deliver some good grip but as said dakars will get there just the same, catch 22 is the side lugs on specials, there bloody useful but also gota be sensible with em ;)

Only tyres which match the grip is every tyre with the same pattern, simex, silverston, matetesta fedima to name a few.

In the thick mud there's no contest, watched a guy running 285 bf pattern MUDs the early sort, it was very thick boggy mud and the glogged up and turnned to slicks and wouldn't pull the other Landy,

Guy with special tracks had ago, and dint even try, it came out like it wasn't stuck, was day and night when put side by side

You need to try a bogger style tread, in the mud I think there at least equal to the simex patterns,
Personally, my view is the taller the tyre the further your gonna get, as your axle is less likely to drag,

Definitely right with taller, you will go further just more risk of snapping something, I've never tryed boggers, they look good, I did abit of reading and they seam to struggle on side slopes and are ment to be very noisy on the road.

I think in a bog where you need to paddle through they would be the better tyre.

I have run these sizes in special tracks:
235/85/16
265/75/16
285/75/16

I find the 285s are by far the best and sit just over 2" taller than the 265 which helps a lot. Your problem is going to be the fact your on standard suspension etc.

If I was you I would go for 235/85/16. Personally I found them better than the 265/75/16 plus you shouldn't need to worry too much about rubbing etc .

Cheers mark

ive used simex 35 10.5 16, now im using 35 10.5 16 fedima trial ade which are a bogger copy but are 37" tall, the extra ht does make a difference, at wigan p+p, Tdi stu on 285/75/16 special tracks was stuck on a couple of sections on his axle, where after recovering him, I drove straight through, and there loads quieter on the road than the simex, shaft snapping is 2 apiece, lol
