Well the suns out and I've finally got a full day to tinker.
Haven't been able to get much done to the Land Rover this past 8 months. Our baby daughter was diagnosed with various disabilities not long after Birth so most of the attention has went to her and my wife since. Its just bits and bobs here and there with the Land rover.
But relocating in August so its suddenly become a race to just get it back on the road for the big move as wont have a garage for about 2-3 years until I save up to build one (hate loans, finance etc).
So finally getting to investigating what the heck was causing the 'lurching' on my Land Rover when taking off from low gears or accelerating from lower speeds. Didn't happen if I feathered the accelerator. But it wasn't normal and very very prominent...it affected your driving. Like when a car lurches if you step on the gas in too high a gear or your running low on fuel going around corners!!! (Ashamed that I know that!)
There was a clunk when taking up drive too...there seems plenty of info on this scenario....not so much on the 'lurching.'
The only sensible info I ever got on the issue was form this forum and especially from member jamesmartin who made more sense in a few messages than every Specialist I spoke to combined...all of whom really just simply couldn't offer any advice, just wanted it
Anyway....finally got under today for some proper poking around....
I found other stuff that I will post about in new threads to keep it from all getting confusing but I have been aware of transmission oil leakage around transfer box so decided to pop pto cover off for a look.
With handbrake in off, neutral etc...did a check I was advised to do via rotating handbrake drum and checking for slack. To be honest I couldn't tell if I was seeing/feeling slack or just normal rotation. Its ok somebody telling what to do but I couldn't actually interpret what I was seeing.
So, I pulled out input gear and was delighted to find the shaft appears drilled. It does however look like a little 'scoring' on the tips of the teeth. I'm not so sure if this is just normal from manufacturing or if its wear?
I also 'THINK' the gearbox output shaft looks pretty good.
But since so many have dealt with this and/or have much more knowledge than me...maybe you could have a looksy at these pics for me to see what you think yourself?
I also wonder...how do you know if your pto cover and bearing cover should have had gaskets or just sealant? Do you just have to rely on whats currently present? I ask because I have no confidence in the previous owners skill/work as have spent enough time redoing it all.
Anyway if you could have a wee looksy for me and tell me what you think?
Heres the input gear....still trying to get a decent photo of gearbox output shaft...hopefully within a few mins.
