I've done this fix today. A couple of points. The stat-in-housing will not fit, there is not enough length of straight hose next to the engine, and also it is designed to fit in a tapered pipe, narrower at the engine end. Of course, it may be that later TD4 manuals than mine ( September 2001 reg ) are fitted with a different top hose, which may accommodate the housing.
I also had to remove the inlet manifold in order to be able to get at the top hose clip, absolutely no way to be able to do the job otherwise - I also removed the hose from the car, this made fitting the stat considerably easier
I also found that it was not possible to get the Renault 5 stat as far into the top hose as the pictures in the Rover 75 "how-to" show. Whereas they show the bulb of the stat quite a way inside the hose, I had to leave 10mm or so of the bulb outside the end of the hose, because the main body was then against the first bend, and could go no further. However, all works well, temp gauge now at 9 o'clock after 5-6 miles, and much more warmth from heater. Well worth doing !!
