Afternoon all, I've got some very rusted wheel nuts to tackle on a 91 reg Defender, followed by an attempt on a (rusted) re-chassis... I've got a high torque impact driver, and am looking to buy some impact sockets, but am wondering if I need to buy a "whole set", or whether I can pick and choose / there are only 4 or 5 that I'll need.....?

Also, I'm wondering if there's a certain brand that people recommend, or are the all pretty much of a muchness?

Any advice appreciated.

I’ve got a set of the US Pro off of Amazon and they are fine. If you can’t afford the full deep/shallow set, get a set of deep ones on their own. It means you need a bit more room, but I find I use them more than the shallow ones.
 
Cheap ****ers will do just fine for home use, all my home tools are the cheapest of the cheap, not broke anything yet.

Yes, I've been pleasantly surprised with US Pro as a budget brand. I have some of their 1/2" sockets as well as larger 3/4" and 1" drive ones for my digger and dumper and I haven't broken any yet.

People on here seem to have good experience with the current generation of Halfords stuff. I'm still a little apprehensive about them because socket sets I bought from them in the 1980s were a little too soft, and the points would come off the insides of the sockets if we used them on anything that had been done up to a high torque, like cylinder head nuts. Maybe they're better nowadays.
 
I bought a set for the back of the landy last week we have a tool & materials van that comes in every friday,
Does welding,grinding drill bits ect. The are a sealey dealer so we take stuff & pay for it the following week.
I dont recall the cost of the sockets but my total bill was 191 sovs, a pack of solder wire connectors & gas heating torch for them.

So when a mate says "have you got a 16mm socket" you can say (nonchalantly), "yeah, somewhere, i've got 3/8, 1/2 or 1/4", have a look in the third drawer on the tool chest".

Of course then you need ratchet wrenches and extension bars.

I might have some of them,
They are nice sockets, but they rust for fun and the size stamping is so shallow it is bloody awkward to read,

I use Halfords Advanced and Draper Expert (which I’m convinced come from the same source), Teng and US Pro. Haven’t had a failure yet in 4 years of work on rusty, old, neglected machines every day so I’d recommend all of them. The real secret is using ample amounts of Plus Gas as long as possible before you start to work!

It looks like a well earned source of pride mate. Love it. My brother in law has a SnapOn tool box with the locker, desk/work station etc in the centre thing that cost him A LOT of dosh. I get it though, as they are a thing of beauty before you open a drawer.

Most of my tools are snap on & mac, snap on was in today he had a pink tool box on the van with carbon trim it must be for a freelander owner. 🤣 🤣
