Like I said from the outset I wasn't asking you to justify the updates just trying to understand if you could do it on a somewhat more reasonable budget and which were vital for the trip.
In terms of cost Is there a point at which you out - update/transform your vehicle from what you could get back- you know like a 2 bed semi in a certain area will only ever reach a ceiling even if its wallpapered in versace wallpaper and its done because that vehicle is sentimental to you or do you hold those updates etc in the intrinsic worth of the vehicle ?

I think if your car is in good nick then you really don't need to do anything really, however, we all like to play with our landies.
My Landy when back together will have no lift, no roof tent, no engle fridge etc, I'll just have spares, plenty of water and fuel and a popup tent. But it will have a bloody good service and spares with me.
I could draw a parallel here between men and Landies and Women, but I fear it would come across as sexism and I'm not sure I want to go there.

i shouldnt want to take your 110 without some serious checking
I don't go further than the end of the drive without aa backup
Plus the sand would blow into the beast through the 2"gap in the drovers door

yes... but that's only an issue if you're doing it up to sell it.
99% of "off-road" spec landy's loose money, people like to put the kit on themselves / don't want to pay £3k for a old knackered disco which is just a toy but has a big lift, tray back, etc. which cost a lot to do.
Drilling the holes in the wing of my D3 to put the snorkel on has knocked it's value - if i was to sell it i'd get another wing and swap it - not everyone likes the off road toys!
As Mark said - when we do Iceland in 2015 he'll need a quick service and be good to go - the work he's doing now will probably last 10 years

Productive day doing bits on the disco today.
Firstly cut some wood to go in front of the roof tent for a wolf box bag to go on...
treated it - twice (outdoor ply, but, not marine grade hence treating it) came to fit it then realised i'd made a proper school boy error... can't get to the bottom of the wood to do the bolts up - it was either cutting the roof off the disco, or, cutting a hole in the wood! So... attempt two...
With bag...
Whilst the roof tent was up I also ran power up and into it...
Also wired in the CB and lots of other bits...
Not long to go now

Roof rack and roof tent knock it down about 3-4mpg on a sensible A road or motorway run.
Put a sump guard on the other day which means the front tow eye is permanently available too, instead of having to remove he plastic panel each time you need it
(Did wonder if i should have painted the wood black though...)

Sump guard will smoother the airflow underneath that car like an F1 car. More than make up for the roof tent ...

Mark is popping down next week so we can finish off wiring in some accessories for him, other than that, it's just working out the packing arrangements and wiring in the CB for me!
We catch the ferry on the evening of the 22nd - so a while to go yet, but, considering we booked it nearly a year ago, it's very close now!

We tested the diffused rear work lights on a portable battery pack on Sunday.
They're going to be more than useful on the dark, desolate evenings in Morocco!

Have you guys got a list of all the mods you've done for the expedition I'm very interested as to what you've done and why?
Obviously I've seen through various updates what you've been up to but there must be plenty you haven't shown us
Mark's will probably take him about 4 hours to write out... mines slightly shorter...
For me, since booking:
New Disco as the D1 rotted (D3 commercial)
roof rack
roof tent (with power - lights and phone chargers)
A/T tyres
2nd battery with fancy charger / battery management system (required for D3)
2400W inverter
Parrot hands free kit and music system (manages all our MP3's)
Sump guard
New air pump for suspension
new bearings all round
full service (every fluid changed, etc.)
New discs and pads
Other new toys for it:
Coleman event shelter - thanks to Adrian Flux
Canon 6D camera
However... I had a new windscreen fitted on Friday... it didn't seal properly - on Saturday I woke up to soaking interior - the Parrott system is dead and the stereo is temperamental - so - 1 week to go and got to have an auto electrician out to fix things

Yes... Auto Glass are paying out for it - Parrot kit was replaced today
Stereo seems to be recovering and spoken to some people who know what they're talking about about what elecs. are down there and nothing too critical, so, might be all ok now
Still a few little jobs to finish off, but, nothing major - just another day's work on Mark's I feel!
